Suggestions for August's Book of the Month

OK, not sure what the best way to do this is, but what would everyone like to read in August.

We could start a new book each calendar month. That gives people enough time to read the book, and also any others that are not our "Book of the Month".

So let's hear some suggestions for books, and the best way to set this deciding thread up.

I haven't read any of those either...

Maybe you should post a short description of the book when you suggest it? Just to make sure everyone knows what everyone's talking about and there aren't any misunderstandings?

Thank you for acting on my every whim!

None of those books are something I'd pick myself actually, but it's never too late to try something new, right

Just a quick question though: those books are all fairly new, right? I hope I can get them in the library or something, cause otherwise I won't be able to play... :(

Since I like nature and gardening, Recipe for Bees looked interesting. Unfortunately, the link for Childhood was busy.

I'm trying to think of more suggestions...how about Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo? If I think of any more, I'll be back. I'm already involved in two other on-line book discussions of Morgan Llywelyn's 1916 and Willa Cather's O Pioneers.

Gracewings, where are you discussing "O Pioneers"? I finished it awhile ago, but wouldn't mind hearing others' thoughts on it.

Count of Monte Cristo is a great book, but maybe too long for most to finish by August - Might be good for something long-term, or in sections?

"Recipe for Bees" sounds good or maybe the author's first book, "The Cure for Death by Lightning".

Anyone for science fiction? Recently picked up my first Ben Bova novel, "Moonrise" at a library sale and a discussion would give me incentive to start it.

Whatever we choose, just hope it's already on my TBR shelf

Just had a quick look down your TBR shelf Ell. I see you've got some Tom Clancy there which might be worth adding to the suggestions?

I'll have a look at what I've got waiting to be read. I know I've got the new John Grisham, but that's only in hardback yet (and not everyone appreciates his writing talents ).

I think it's a good idea if we limit the "BOTM" to books that are in paperback and available in the libraries.

I'm up for Tom Clancy **looks over at bookshelf and every edition in hardcover on it **

I would recommend Red Storm Rising, as it is the only stand alone novel, and quite well written. It is also one of his earliest books, so therefore easily available in paperback, and Libraries

I bought this lot for £10 new from one of these cheap bookshops. Don't know what they're like, but they're waiting to be read.

Peter Robinson - Dry Bones that Dream
Hammond Innes - The Blue Ice
James Herbert - Haunted
Dick Franics - Hot Money
Colin Forbes - The Stone Leopard
Ken Follett - The Man From St Petersburg
Colin Dexter - The Wench is Dead
Martin Cruz Smith - Habana Bay
Wilbur Smith - Eagle in the Sky
Robin Cook - Coma

great idea... was gonna suggest that.. that way people don't have to spend a fortune on books if they don't want to

that limits my BOTM suggestions to the Sidney Sheldon one. Haven't read a lot of that author myself, so don't know how good it would be... more into literature myself.

How about "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood? It's been quite awhile since I read it, but wouldn't mind a re-read. It would satisfy both the sci-fi fans and those of a more literary bent.

I'd also be ok with the others mentioned previously, including Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising or "Coma" .

Not sure I'd read the Sidney Sheldon, though - sorry Townbear :(

Any more suggestions? We should compile a final list and vote pretty soon.
