When it comes to fiction writers I would be torn between J.R.R. Tolkien and Alexandre Dumas.

Your choice is easy because, even though you think you read a lot, the actualy reading you do is minimal.
And before you even think about it ,fast reading technic would not help for has someone very justly said here, it is only good for studies or technical books, not for pleasure.
By reading say ten books a year and understanding about half, your choice is quite simple.

Try to narrow to say to your favorite contemporary writer, Americain, English, ... by been so general, you just make it really obvious the wrong idea you have about books.

BTW there is good authors who also knows how to tell story with style. Not like Stephen king (who is good too) but like real literature, Umberto Eco for exemple.
I am a slow reader...indeed. I never said otherwise.

A comment originally directed toward AQB, but I can no longer resist:

I think the number of unspoken assumptions in that post is staggering.

Is there really a right way to read?

Is there really a right level of required comprehension?

Is there really a right idea about books?

Is there really a right defintion of real literature?

And finally does anything justify personal put-downs of other members because they have different ways or views about reading?

My answer to all those questions is "No."

My answer to AQB's original question: Vladimir Nabokov.

I mainly wonder why some seem to think it's necessary, or part of their "job description" to denigrate others. None of us live in glass houses saliothomas.

Well, Salio, call me a fish, or a monkey, or whatever.
I am glad for the tolerance this forum shows, compared to others with more finicky tastes about posting where I am no longer a member.

What's good about you duet is that you alway go together (could you be siameses ?), and sing the same tune.

This happened already twice on two different boards and about the same charatere, Mr Chuch River who for some obscure raison you toke upon yourselves to be the body guards(talking about job description).

I did not denigrate the fellow, i just explained why i could not pick a "all time favorite writer !" and he did not mind, actulally even replied for a change.

You two are the passive/agressive lot, and strangely enough, you are always around when it hit the fan and also strangely you are alway the poor victime of some vindicative horde.
Pure white knighes that you are.

Oh i forgot

Ahh Saliothomas, amusing as always.

Where do you see any victims?

Also, I beg to differ, it seems that quite often, you do feel the need to denigrate AQB. I've seen it innumerable times in threads here, and ignore it as it truly deserves. On occasion, I feel it is taken a little too far.

Sarcasm does not become you btw, it's a bit like cursing, a weak mind expressing itself forcefully.

No flowers.

You know, these all sound like future AquaBlue threads.

I probably spent way more time thinking about this statement than I should have but I think having a favorite writer per genre is silly, especially when you're talking about non-fiction; not to mention writers who write in different genres.
