great but depressing mystery

I just finished reading Body of Truth by David Lindsay. It was a very thought provoking mystery with many surprising twists and is also very suspenseful. It is set in Guatemala and the descriptions of torture and murder that go on there are very disturbing and depressing, but unfortunately realistic. Being in same position myself, I could relate to it as it is story of American investigator in foreign country who must operate without powers of arrest.
