Angels & Demons

It was bound to happen.

Link.

I wonder how much opposition this one will stir up, though I doubt it will as Langdon is trying to save the Vatican.

Tom Hanks as Langdon again. I'm certain that more than a few members here are waiting in great anticipation.;) :p

This is the first I've heard of this movie. I wonder if it will provide as much material for the Discovery Channel as The Da Vinci COde did.

I also liked this better than TDVC, although it really is just luck for DB as he was writing to exactly the same formula.

At the very least, this is going to boost sales of A&D, and probably TDVC, Deception Point, and Digital Fortress as well. Let us all cry into our pillows as a massive display of protest.

The only problem I have with 'The Da Vinci Code' is that I have to occasionally remind people it is fiction...

You would be surprised at the number of people who really believe it's based on fact. Face it. Dan Brown thought it all up.

I liked The Da Vinci Code more as a movie than as a book. When I read it, I felt like Brown had written it knowing it would be adapted to film.

I also liked Angels and Demons better than TDVC, too, so maybe the movie will turn out ok. I must say, I absolutely love Tom Hanks, so I'm planning on seeing it anyway.

Horriable horriable and horriable... I can't not believe that people paid for these book... I mean really money and now movies are being made of them...

A&D is a horriable book not because the topic because of the wroting and story telling... I think book should come with instruction on how to properly rip the pages out one at a time so it can be used to wipes one ass... either and elixar for time so one can regain the time spent reading or watching this horriable horriable book...

Dan Brown please stop writing go do sothing else....maybe testing experimentle parchutes would be a great job for you...

I think we've blasted Dan Brown enough now...(lol)

Let's look at the lives of SOME famous authors today. I say SOME, because there are those who remain true to the form that got them where they are today.

However...(evil laugh)

Occasionally,
this is how it works with an author who suddenly becomes rich and a going concern.

They hire a staff. They upgrade their computers, software, and other items to make their writing lives easier. One reason they do these things is pressure for promotion and media time from the publisher. They are now required to make a lot of appearances.

Sometimes, the author's personal staff helps them out a bit on faster book development. It depends on how extensive a staff the author hires, i.e. to what level they expand the writing circle. With the money they earned previously, they can accomplish more...more releases...more sales...publisher is happy, staff gets paid, author makes money.

Thankfully, even these authors are usually the main creative process in their future titles. This is good.

When Publishers Dump You: Generally speaking only, many publishing houses might allow a minimum of TWO losers on a previously best-selling author. With the time demands, it can be tougher to create consistently good work.

A good staff can help the author's work become consistent, and he/she can create longer.

On the other side of the coin, there are best-selling authors who MIGHT hire someone to help answer the mail, but otherwise write as they always have. These authors usually upgrade their homes (see: 'My New Writing Office') and equipment, and find time to meet their publisher's media requests, and continue writing.

No, not me can't not disbelieve nothing neither.

I know I know...sorry about the grammer... I am horriable with words...

I have trouble writing out what I am thinking and saying...

Sadly I have always had this problem... spelling is horriable as well and when we are on a forum I always get made fun on it... it is ok I am used to it...

You know, Dan Brown gets a lot of flak for ripping others off. Famously, people claimed that he ripped off both the Holy Blood, Holy Grail folks and Umberto Eco in The Da [sic] Vinci Code. But really, echoing what amner says above, that's justs window-dressing; the actual content of his books isn't the point, as much as it is to keep the clues coming; he could write the exact same book about any subject on the FSM's green earth. Dan Brown is the ultimate triumph of Trivial Pursuit over actual intelligence, presenting something that sounds clever but once you strip it of its big words is just a painfully simple scavenger hunt. ("Did you know that 'rose' is an anagram of 'Eros'?" "WHAT?!?") Whatever the subject, religion, politics, art (as in the DVC) or physics (as in A&D), what irks isn't so much the factual errors - it's fiction, after all - but the glaring obviousness of them, the feeling that he's deliberately dumbing it down and exploiting the reader's most uninformed fears, whether it's secret societies or the LHC. And being utterly devoid of even the tiniest sliver of humour, there's never that knowing "Yeah, we know, but just bear with us" wink that you get from good action novels/films.

But yeah, we were talking rip-offs. And as I sit there slogging through the painfully dull Angels and Demons, something's gnawing at the back of my head. I've seen this before.

A sinister plot to blow up one of the world's most powerful organisations! Black cars speeding through an empty downtown! Libraries that turn into death traps, complete with a meter telling the victims how long they have to live! A race against time for our dynamic duo (the smart one and the dumb one to whom the smart one gets to explain everything) to decode the clues left by their evil nemesis and stop the ticking bomb! And a smug moral lesson at the end!
Joker: Suppose Penguin did fail! All the more reason not to send up your stupid clues!
Riddler: Oh, but I must, I must! Outwitting Batman is my sole delight, my heaven on earth, my very paradise!
...It's friggin' Batman, isn't it? And I don't mean Burton or Nolan, I mean the good ol' TV series with Adam West and Burt Ward, eternally facing the Riddler and his nefarious schemes.
Batman: Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!
The difference, of course, being that Batman knew nobody would take it seriously. But here's Tom Hanks, as stonefaced as the statues he shows us like he's the world's most overpriced tour guide (not to mention the only one, apparently - the Vatican seems shocked to find out that there are *gasp* churches all over Rome! Some with actual religious and historical background!), running from one site to the next, quickly decoding vague clues that are supposedly so difficult to figure out that only he could do it - and yet the villain's plan wouldn't work if nobody figured them out. Logic go BOOM.
Commissioner Gordon: [reads] What weighs six ounces, sits in a tree and is very dangerous?
Robin: A sparrow with a machine gun!
Commissioner Gordon: Yes, of course.
And somewhere in there is poor Stellan Skarsgård scowling menacingly at the script, and Ewan MacGrrrregga trying to sound imposing but only barely managing to do a passable Keanu Reeves impression when he talks of "the lightning's awesome power." Like, dude.

Holy crap, holy fail, Batman. Someone hand down the Hanks repellant bat spray. *ssssss* Aaaaah, that's better.

:star1:

I'm half way through Angels and Demons right now and it is a real page turner; just what a good thriller should be like.

Of course there will be those who want to read more into it than what the author intended. Just as they did with The Da Vinci Code.
