June 2008 - Book Group Suggestions

I really haven't kept track. I suggested Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev and I'd still like to go with it.

I could go with A Farewell to Arms, too.

I agree with you Robert, easy to find, not to big, plus most of us bough them already.Maybe sandwitch Hemighway betwin the two Russian?

That's fine me with. I don't have A Farewell to Arms yet, but anything Hemingway should be easy to find.

We need to set up a discussion thread for The First Circle. I'm just getting into it, and I would like to comment from time to time as I read.

I am six chapters in so I would participate too.

If everyone agrees to Farewell to Arms I am in .

I think we need to make a decision soon so those of us that don't have a copy have plenty of time to get one.

You can count me in.

Are we going to do a vote? Titles suggested:

The Sea by John Banville

The Silver Swan by Benjamin Black

Embers by Sandor Marai

Suit Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky

West of Rome by John Fante

The Crusades Through Arab Eyes by Amin Maalouf

A Farewell to Arms by Hemingway

Main Street by Sinclair Lewis

The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America by David Hajdu

Joan: The Mysterious Life of the heretic Who Became a Saint by Donald Spoto

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

A Farewell to Arms seems to have the most interest.

The last two are not even in the running, even though( Joan is a great biography) and The Kite Runner wasn't taken very well. lol
After I saw the movie ,which I liked , I could understand there would not be much discussion about it.

What happened to Fathers and Sons? Should it still be in the running, or are we agreeeing to hold it back a month?

I finished the 10-Cent Plague too and while it had some interesting bits, it was probably not a good pick for most people, it probably should be removed.

No Robert, just from a search I did on it, nothing more.

"In this classic satire of small-town America, beautiful young Carol Kennicott comes to Gopher Prairie, Minnesota, with dreams of transforming the provincial old town into a place of beauty and culture. But she runs into a wall of bigotry, hypocrisy and complacency."
