Not interested in e-books but have bought books from amazon simply because I could not find them elsewhere. Bookstores simply do not carry older titles.
However, for older out of print books I have found Biblio.com to be even better than amazon. Have found titles there amazon did not have...
Have read The Hobbit and LOTR several times in my life. Never grow tired of them. Yes, LOTR is long and detailed and in today's world of short atention spans and five minute sound bytes can see how it might not appeal.
To younger readers: yes, it is a lot tougher to read than the Harry Potter...
I know this is an old thread but since I am reading it for another book club will bring it up.
This is a great book. The Arthurian legend rises to the level of Greek tragedy.i/e Oedipus.
The clash of cultures, Saxon vs Briton, the clash of religions, with ascendant Christians being as...
I am not posting this in the SF/Fantasy/Horror board for though Howard wrote plenty of that for the pulps, he also wrote Westerns, boxing stories, and historical adventure fiction, plus some things that are hard to categorize.
Had he not taken his own life at age 30, he might have become an...
Any fans here of Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown 's Mrs Murphy mysteries? They are among my favorites.
Also her Sister Jane novels.
I live in the part of Virginia where Rita Mae resides and many of the names of places she mentions in those books are real.
Have a number of books signed...
Joan Baez for me will always be number One!
After her, some other favorites

Melissa Etheridge

Stumbled on this forum when searching for something else. Delighted to have found it. Ironic, when you hear that electronic media like the Web will destroying reading books- and here have a place where booklovers can get together.
All I can say is that a I am a lifelong voracious, eclectic...
I'm a fan too. Its too bad he's one of those authors who often gets overlooked nowadays.
Another one worth reading is Before Adam, his take on prehistoric man. Remember he is was writing at a time when archaeological expeditions to then-remote parts of the world were often in the news.
Recently finished the first volume The Cry of the Icemark, and will be seeking out the others.
Great story, its like Edgar Rice Burroughs was writing in the present day for the YA audience.
Being a great fan of Xena and Buffy, have to like Thirrin.
Actually bought the book because of the...
Yes, Doyle did make some factual errors in the stories. Another is in "The Five Orange Pips" where he says the name Ku Klux Klan was derived from sound made by "cocking a rifle" ( It was from a Greek word meaning circle plus clan in the Scottish sense).
But I too am a great Holmes fan. In...
Wouldnt call it SF, maybe "prehistorical fiction", but for tons of anthropology, there is the Earth's Children series by Jean Auel, starting with Clan of the Cave Bear.
Understand she will have another volume out next year in this series.
Another I recommend is The Mammoth Book of Vampire Stories by Women. Authors include Anne Rice, Poppy Z. Brite, Tanya Huff, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and many others people are likely familiar with.
Although the original post was about modern-day vampires, I strongly recommend The Penguin Book...
