Hi Motokid, Screwtape is subtitled Letters from a Senior to a Junior Devil (or something similar) Lewis imagines that a novice devil is working in the field and is receiving advice from his line-manager on how to lead souls to damnation. It is really the story of one young man who is being...
Or:
There Was a Young Person of Smyrna.
By Lear, Edward .
There was a Young Person of Smyrna,
Whose Grandmother threatened to burn her;
But she seized on the cat,
And said, "Granny, burn that!

There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, "It is just as I feared! -

Try The Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith. Published 1892 but still very, very funny. I guarantee you'll never forget Mr Pooter, his dear wife, Carrie and errant son, Lupin.

Has your mother discovered Precious Ramotswe yet? I would strongly recommend Alexander McCall Smith's Botswana novels starting with The No. One Ladies' Detective Agency.
The Full Cupboard of Life by Alexander McCall Smith (nearly finished - brilliant)
Iris Murdoch As I Knew Her by A N Wilson (just started - interesting)
Memory and Identity by John Paul II (can only read a few pages at a time- dense but enlightening)
