Vintage Books- How to avoid damage?

Hi, I'm preparing centerpieces for a book themed wedding. We are using stacks of vintage books, which will be tied together with lace. However, the lace alone is not enough to keep the off-kilter arrangements from shifting during transport and while the catering staff put them out.

I'm looking for a way to hold the books in place together that is non-permanent and will not damage them (so obviously glue is out). I have thought about double sided tape or poster tacky, but am concerned the residue may damage the covers- and we would like to donate the books after the wedding.

Any suggestions?

Use strong fishing line tie the books together, many brands are see through
I think that would work well if the books were all aligned, but the books will be stacked more like the ones in the picture below.

Some stores sell these circular gel pads, kind off like what you stick under furniture or chopping boards in your kitchen to stop them from moving. You can get ones with sticky back but I am also pretty certain you can get them from kitchenware places where they don't have any sort of adhesive on them. You could use these between each book to keep them from sliding on each other and the lace to hold them together.
Like I said most well-stocked kitchenware stores should stock them or even hardware stores.
Hope that helps :)
(P.S. Great theme idea. And I totally love that your donating the books afterwards!)
