My name is Mohammed Abu Dalhoum and now I can say I am a second-generation writer. In the summer of 2012, my late father Mamduh Abu Dalhoum asked me to help him in writing his newest and last book. Since my father had some eyes problems, he was not able to type or write by himself. Instead, he would recite what he wanted to write and I would type that on the computer and then read it to him to check and assess the musicality of the sentence. We spent the entirety of the summer doing this process. As soon as he would go to sleep, I would start writing my daily reflection on my experience.
I kept what I wrote in a daily blog on the Internet, and about a year ago, I decided to convert that blog into a novel/memoir. It was a dream for me to publish a book of my own, but I thought I had all the time in the world to finish it and show it to my father. Therefore, I decided to hide the blog as well as the book's manuscript from him mainly because I wanted to finish my project and hand him a copy and say: “look dad, I wrote this. It’s about you, inspired by you. I’m following your footsteps.” Unfortunately, my father passed away on April 28th, and I never got to tell him about my book.
I realized that there is not a better listener than a blank piece of paper, so I worked nonstop on the book during this summer, edited it about five times. I looked close and far for publishers, and God how many times I heard no for an answer particularly because I am young.
I never gave up on my dream. The book is finally out now. Titled: “The Life of a Writer Through The Eyes of His Son”, is my story celebrating the life of one of most distinguished Arab novelists. It is my story that I never got to tell my father, and now I want to tell the world about it.
