Not a lot of people I know have read this book but I absolutely adore it! Libba Bray has crafted the world of magic and fantasy with reality in a womderful yet fantastical way. Gemma is such a complex character and even though I've read that book hundreds of times I always find something new out about Gemma with every read.
My favourite character though has to be Pippa, if you've read this book you'll be thinking that that is a strange choice but there's something about Pippa that I find fascinating. Pippa is the most vulnerable character in the books. She is young, epileptic, hot headed and a little bit dim but that's what makes her stand out to me. She decides to let go of her old life but then desperately clings on to get it back, how many of us have regretted choices like that, you choose to leave something behind but then discover that it meant a lot more to you than you originally thought.
Pippa is also fragile in the sense that she's too afraid to "pass over" so to speak. She doesn't want to leave her friends behind and she's scared of what will come next but as a result she turns into some sort of monster. That's the fascinating side of Pippa. She goes from being a terrified little thing into a terrifying creature. In such a short space of time Pippa has ultimately become some sort of demented animal, such a drastic change from her old form.
The story in A Great and Terrible Beauty is phenomenal! I love the fantasy, the romance, the adventures and the wonderful elaboration of the characters with the settings. The dream world they are able to enter goes from inspiring to horrifying over the course of the three books. What used to be beautiful becomes terrifying and dangerous. The way Ms Bray turns an ideal world into one of nightmares is beautifully done and the storyline is full of suspense and wonder!
Libba Bray is a truly brilliant author, she definitely inspires me in my writing. As an author I admire her work and as a reader I enjoy her writing!
A Great and Terrible Beauty is a great read for all teenagers! I would definitely recommend you read it!
