Fantasy: Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Weis/Hickman. It came free with a game for my sinclair spectrum and my brother bet me i wouldn't be able to read it cos it was too big. I was 10. Last time i reread it i remember thinking that it's actially quite good.
Horror: Misery by Stephen King...
Can't really help, been too long since i read it, but was thinking Lestat's interactions with humans would be more interesting.
Isn't there an implication that Louis is lying through the whole book? Maybe just from the sequels....
Normally i specifically request NO BOOKS for xmas. I always end up getting them, but they're never the sort i want to read.
This year i've given up and sent a list of books i want to my familly, with links to their amazon pages, so there can be no confusion. :)
Would like to buy books...
I read one of the Rats books when i was trapped on holiday with no reading material. Thought it was very foolish, and not in the least scary.
Spoiler:
Every time the rats struck i thought 'why exactly are they eating him alive?'
I know they were mutants but that doesn't excuse them from...
I had hardbacks of the first trilogy when i was about 12, but mother said my books had to go to make room for my brother. I always regret not keeping them (esp. when i see them on ebay for more than i could possibly afford) so i'm getting all 4 and i'll worry about if the are any good later :)
Can't sentences be mitigated? in fact lots of things can be mitigated!
And period can be a full stop or (in UK at least) refer to menstruation,
so 'she sat by the roadside for a period' could be ambiguous.
I went to a state school in england, and RE was part of the curiculum, but it wasn't compulsory, and could be dropped completly at 14. We studied Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sihkism and some vague humanitarianism.
I found it (like most of school) a waste of time, but not really any...
I've got it on order from the book club, but might wait til all 4 are out before i read it.
Could it not have been written in 3 like the first chronicles? bloody money-grabbing stinking publishers....
Definately persevere :D
It's not the easiest of books, and the repetative names are annoying, but the cumulative effect of all the chapters is brilliant. When you finally finish it'sa like waking up from a dream that made sense while you were dreaming it ;)
Erm, no!
Think you're supposed to find some evidence of your hypotheses. Light's wave-particle duality is accepted cos it's been shown to act like a stream of particles at some times and as a wave at others. And the speed of light is indepependant of the colour of the light!
And dark matter...
I thought LotR was OK, but it's fans seem unable to judge the trilogy without bringing up Tolkien's life's work. He may have written a huge detailed history, but for those who couldn't even be bothered with the Simarillion it really makes no difference. I think a book (or series) should stand on...
Exactly my thinking. Overwrought sexual frustration played a big part in The Shrinking Man too (by the same author; its quite good). Guess that says more about the writer than the characters. :)
Oooh, only 3...
Handmaids Tale - M. Atwood
Canticle for Leibowitz - W. Miller
Gormanghast trilogy - M. Peake
ah, bumfluff, i just thought of at least 3 more so i'm gonna stop there
I've had a busy reading week. Managed to get through:
Lord of Light - Roger Zelazny (9/10) Very good book. The world-building was great, the characters ok, and the hindu mythology fascinating. To many unnecessary hindi words though.
Hothouse - Brian Aldis (7/10). Quite good. Lots of great...
Overall i thought i was good (8/10).
I liked the scientific basis, far more sensical than other attempts (eg. Jack Williamson's Darker than you think explains werewolves by giving them the ability to alter reality for no reason except when silver is nearby [again for no reason]).
The only...
Unless its an especially complicated (or boring) book, i read 50 pages an hour. I can just about get through a 300 page book in an evening, but this requires grabbing a MD's on the way home to save on cooking time and unplugging the damned TV. So normaly 2 working days per book.
As i've had...
I've read weaveworld and forever war, but as forever war is on my shelf i'll 2nd that (and try to get hold of weaveworld for dec - Ebay here i come :) )
