    any sites ?

Project Gutenberg: https://www.gutenberg.org/ contains some 50,000 free ebooks in the public domain. They may not have what you're looking for since it only deals with copyright-free books, but it does have plenty.

    Nobody reads?

The son, currently in 7th grade, of a friend of mine came to lunch with a book. My friend asked him to tell me about the books he's reading - he's currently reading 4 and all of them involve psychology or astronomy. All were pretty heavy non-fiction. His son then said that kids at school look at...

    Favorite Manga of all time

I still love Ranma 1/2, Love Hina, Sgt. Frog, 猫ラーメン(Neko Ramen), Urusei Yatsura and a few others. There is very good manga out there and much of it (though not all of it) has incredible artwork as well. Don't limit yourself because you think you're "too old."

    Laurence Sterne: Tristram Shandy

Yes! One of the great books! The digression into the contract his mother and father made concerning his birth, including the actual turgid legalese, is amazing. Not to mention "Alas, Poor Yorick!" his Uncle's groin injury, and the realization that so much of who we are happens when we're not...

have you guys read an e-book

I've read numerous books on a Kindle and I've slowly come to the conclusion that it is no match for the old fiber. It does win out on storage and portability, of course. But it fails hugely on ease of use. If I want to look something up that I read 50 pages back, it's difficult to flip back and...

    Random Question..Keep posting

A few years ago, a local church ran out of room on their public sign and so chose to abbreviate the Apostle's Creed like this: "On the third day he rose ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, he will come again to judge the living-dead." I wish I had a photo of...

have you guys read an e-book

I've read several books on the Kindle and found it an ok experience. I could definitely live with it when the inevitable move to ebooks happens. I like the convenience weight ease of use and the ability to take an entire library with me when traveling. Plus, I can buy and download books...

    Is Amazon killing literary culture?

I'm still not clear on what "literary culture" implies in this context. If it means people getting together at bookstores, discussing the latest reads or anything at all, then it seems unfair to put the blame on Amazon alone. American culture in general seems to have swayed towards a less...

    Fewer books in book stores?

Has anyone noticed "other stuff" encroaching on the book shelfspace at their nearby big book chain? I visited one last week and thought I accidentally wandered into a toy store. I was surrounded by puzzles, stuffed animals and other doo-dads that seemed to have nothing whatsoever to do with...

    When fiction dissolves...

Interesting. Well, perhaps the study had something. Though all studies end up generalizations to some degree. Though no one seems as extreme as me, I wonder what would cause a decline in fiction reading with age? My only theory is that as I've aged (and I'm not really that old) time has become...

What do you use as a bookmark?

I use my notes, which I scribble for just about every book I read. Plus, I always read to the end of a section or chapter, so finding my way back isn't ever a problem. In other words, I don't use a bookmark.

    When fiction dissolves...

Not too long ago I was discussing books with a friend and the subject of fiction intruded into our conversation. We were discussing the books we had recently read and none of them, it turns out, were fiction. "Recent" meant the past 2 -3 years as we live on different continents and don't speak...

A History of the Banjo: Frank Converse's Banjo Reminiscences Articles (what would today be called 'memoirs') from 1901 - 1902 about life as a traveling minstrel banjo player.

Who is your favourite author, and why?

I have no favorite author. I'll never have the time to read enough books to really know anyway. How many authors have I not read? Countless. Are they my favorites? Probably only until I read others I haven't read... ad infinitum...

Where are you? (in the book you are reading) - please read 1st post

I'm at the beginning of the end of the Austro-Hungarian empire. June 28, 1914. I should probably get out of there quick if my memory from the future serves me well...
