    Writing tips from Kurt Vonnegut

In the flurry of coverage following his death, I was reminded of this advice for writing a short story: 1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted. 2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for. 3. Every character...

    Kurt Vonnegut

Kurt is up in Heaven now. I am honorary president of the American Humanist Association, having succeeded the late, great science fiction writer Isaac Asimov in that functionless capacity. We had a memorial services for Isaac a few years back, and at one point I said, “Isaac is up in Heaven...

    Which One's Your Favorite?

They sound like the students knew about the contest. Kind of a so-bad-it's-good challenge.

    need help with grammar.

In her fun little book, Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies, June Casagrande includes a chapter titled "The Comma Denominator--Good News: No One Knows How to Use These Things," and makes a convincing case with excerpts from standard grammar books that disagree with each other. Just sayin'.

    Happy Birthday Mari!

Further thank-yous, poppy, flor, and ds. Yes, the incubation continues apace. I really didn't have much morning sickness. Mostly, food just seemed very unappealing. Very. The avatar is just me smiling, and with less theatrical makeup. I have simplified that kind of thing lately.

Market them! The maternity market is evergreen! As you know. Especially "Spare me the horror stories." Omigod I need that one. Now. Badly.

    Happy Birthday Mari!

Oh come on it wasn't that bad. Except maybe the t-shirts. But hey, I'm going to need all the big t-shirts I can get pretty soon, right? If only they didn't have all those stupid expressions on them. We already know what's on board, how it got there, etc., ok?

    Happy Birthday Mari!

Thank you all! The plush bookworm was last year. This year the theme was gag gifts having to do with maternity.

any ideas for old book pricing??

Abebooks gives you an idea of a used or rare book's retail value. Most of the listings are entered by professional booksellers, after all, so you're going to get the high end of price ranges--always higher than the price that an individual will get when selling a book herself. However, if...

    Chickens coming home to roost

Thank you for your replies. The idea of spreading the books out was a good one, except that we own more books than anything else. We'd end up distributing the other stuff among the books instead. We're going with small boxes, quite a few of them in fact. About a hundred I think. At one...

    Chickens coming home to roost

In the time that we have lived in our fourth-floor walk-up, we have accumulated 2,000 books. It was all so gradual and easy, but now we have to move them. Any advice, tips, commiseration? Thanks.

Children's Books re: Diversity, Racism, Differences, etc.

Two books that focus on skin color are: The Color of Us, by Karen Katz. For preschoolers. All the Colors of the Earth, by Sheila Hamanka. For early grades. Mostly I believe that a child should be exposed to a diversity of characters in books, even if the book isn't explicitly about...

Let's Smash The Literary World Into Bits With A Wrecking Ball! It'll Be Fun!

Nope--no wrestling. I was embarrassed about my momentary politeness to him, so I posted in anger. From there I could only cross the line to flaming, so I will not be posting in his threads again.

Let's Smash The Literary World Into Bits With A Wrecking Ball! It'll Be Fun!

In light of problems with the veracity of your other posts, I regret this comment. I can't be confident that you have ever read Dos Pasos, Jack London, Anne Sexton, Ocatavio Paz, Russel Edson, Frank Lima, Edward Roditi, or the French modern Poets, whom you capitalize for reasons known only to...
