Book & Reader offers its members the chance to take part in a Book of the Month reading group. All books discussed are decided on by the members of the forum via a democratic process: nomination followed by voting. The rules below are subject to change, so please check back regularly.

Nominating a Book

Suggestions are generally taken from two months to six weeks prior to the start of discussion. Members are strongly encouraged to include a description of their book along with their nomination.

On occasion members will be required to suggest books with certain themes. These themes will be chosen by the membership using the same nomination and voting process. On these months members should explain how their book ties into the theme unless it is obvious.

Any member can suggest a book, however, shameless self promotion will not be tolerated and the suggestion will not be voted on.

A maximum of ten books will be voted on. If more than ten books are suggested books with more than one nomination will take priority (books with three nominations get priority over books with two etc). The remainder will be put forward in the order they are suggested until the ten voting slots are filled.

Voting For a Book

Voting is generally done from six weeks to one month prior to the start of discussion. This will allow members one month to obtain and read the book prior to the start of discussion.

Discussion of voting will be allowed in the voting thread. However, bullying or promoting will not be tolerated. Members soliciting votes or behaving in an aggressive manner will have their book removed. Said book will not be eligible for nomination for six months. That member will also not be allowed to suggest or second a book for six months. The "three strike policy" does not apply, and depending on the situation and "official warning" may be issued as well.

Only ONE book will be chosen. Ties will be decided according to the rules set forth below:
  • First book nominated will be the winner.
  • In the case that both books were nominated by the same user, in the same post we will go with the book that has the most seconds.
  • If the tied books have the same number of seconds, we'll go with the first one listed by the user in the nomination post.

Discussing A Book

Discussion will generally begin on the first of the month. Any aspect of the chosen book may be discussed. Members are encouraged to use spoiler tags as Book of the Month threads will be moved into the appropriate "Bookshelves" forum at the end of the discussion period. If there is already an existing thread, the two will be combined. Discussion threads will remain open after they are moved so that members may continue to discuss or re-open the discussion later on. Members can always refer to this thread for links to previous Book of the Month choices.
