J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

I know there must be something wrong with me because I found the Lord Of The Rings mind numbing juvenile gibberish.

Well, why bash? Tolkien was the very first of his kind. It may seem hackneyed now, but it wasn't when he did it. No, I don't like his preaching or his Catholic imagery (not as strong as Lewis's). But he's a powerful story-teller in a classic allegorical Norse style. He should be enjoyed or hated on his own terms.

I have no idea what you just said Jim.
All I said was I didn't like it.
 
My favourite book in the Lord of the Rings series is The Hobbit, by a mile!! Not sure why they haven't put out a movie based on that book...it is really what started it all. As a matter of fact, The Hobbit is one of my favourite books of all time.

Not only are they making one movie of it, but two. Because... well, obviously it takes 2 three-hour epics to tell that story. :rolleyes:
 
I think The Hobbit is certainly an easier read and better written than The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I love all of them. If I had to pick one I might go for Two Towers.
 
One book or three or six, it's the best book I've ever read. I only wish that Tolkien was able to write everything he wanted to regadring middle earth. It's shame that we only have a small sample of his grand vision.

I am very disappointed that Peter Jackson isn’t directing it. From what I’ve seen of Guillermo de Toro’s works, I don’t think he’s capable of doing the great job Peter Jackson did with Lord of the Rings. I hope I’m wrong.

Really? According to whom? Last I heard he was going to produce and del Toro (whose Pan's Labyrinth spanks Jackson's four latest movies raw) was going to direct. IMDb, which is usually updated quickly, still has del Toro as director.

del Toro - to direct The Hobbit?
That will make for an interesting and dark take on it. From what I've seen of Del Toro's films The Hobbit would be too light and lacking edge. As I say will be interesting.

And if we read that article, here's what it says:
Jackson's manager Ken Kamins told Hollywood Insider that Jackson won't be directing the films. "Peter won't be directing because he felt the fans have waited long enough for The Hobbit. It will take the better part of every day of the next four years to write, direct and produce two Hobbit films. Given his current obligations to both The Lovely Bones and Tintin, waiting for Peter, Fran, and Phillippa to write, direct and produce The Hobbit would require the fans wait even longer."

Directors Sam Raimi (Spider-Man), Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth), and Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men) are still the names that come up as alternate possiblities, but no official creative decision has been made.

Since then (the article's from December), del Toro's been confirmed as the director. In other words, exactly what Robert said.
 
I see very few movies these days and it's been years since I've seen one at the theature, but I might make the trip for this one. I hope they do it justice.
 
Peter Jackson will be co-writing and producing, but will not be directing. That will go to Sam Raimi and/or del Toro (as they will be made at the same time they may get one directing each part).
 
Now that I've mentioned to people that I'm re-reading LOTR for the first time in several years, I find a few people have said that they couldn't really get into it for one reason or another. Even after a second time I don't find the story difficult to become enraptured in. If anything I think I am loving it more. To each their own, I suppose.

At any rate I am very happy to be reading Tolkien's classic again. I need better editions than these mass market paperbacks though. ;)

LOTR is better if you read The Hobbit first. I plan to read The Hobbit again before I see the movie.
