    Sarah Waters: The Night Watch

I read this on holiday and really enjoyed it. I was really interested in the characters and was pleased that they weren't necessarily likeable in the conventional sense - they were human with faults and all. It was the first Waters book I have tried so got Affinity out of the library today...

    Hot Fuzz

Has anyone else seen this yet? I found it extremely funny but very, very gory. I haven't seen Shaun of the Dead. Maybe if I had, I would have known what to expect  Not sure if it has been released outside the UK so sorry if you have no idea what I'm talking about (a little British film).

    Fantasy Movies

Isn't it a bit gory though? Some friends were really put off by that and I'm not sure I want to see it any more. What did you think? btw - how are you finding Oryx and Crake - I really liked it but I know not everybody has done!

John Berendt: The City of Falling Angels

Thanks for your comments - you've swayed me towards it now.

    12 Best One-Hit Wonders of the 80s

Wow, they really must have been one hit wonders. I don't think I know them at all.

John Berendt: The City of Falling Angels

Did you get round to reading it? I also loved Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil but read some dodgy reviews of this book. Would you recommend it?

What Book Changed Your Political Thinking?

I do agree with you Novella that political theory is a load of navel-gazing. Do you think that these thinkers aren't really influencing future behaviour and that instead, they're observing and describing what is already happening? In the UK, it is generally held that Tony Blair was influenced...

    12 Best One-Hit Wonders of the 80s

I think that in the UK at least, Duran Duran was already popular by the time (later in 1981) that Soft Cell brought out Tainted Love. My favourite alternative bands of the 80s has to include the Cocteau Twins, the Chameleons and The The. I doubt if any of those were ever heard of outside these...

Who here plays with the Rubik's cube?

I used to like making patterns on each face of the cube. I think it went something like one colour in the middle and corners and another colour in the squares inbetween. Each face had to have the same pattern (but with different colours obviously). Have no idea how to do it now though.

    If you could be anywhere...

The nice thing about this thread is that it's made me realise how happy I am right now, right here. The sun is shining, I was by the beach earlier, the swifts are back and nesting in my roof and the daffodils are stunning. Only thing is, I move in September...

    Story beginning

I like it Novella. I've been reading each installment as you post them and I am definitely impatient to know who Bruno is - whether he is someone suspicious, flirtatious, interesting etc. I was slightly confused in the first part but that's no bad thing in itself. Is Sid the same person as...
