    Emile Zola: Germinal

I just bought La Bete Humaine by Zola and very much looking forward to it... It is in French though, which is going to be quite a challenge I have to say (I do A level French and only just come to a level of competence where I can read a full book in French). But hopefully it'll be fun and...

Mikhail Lermontov: A Hero Of Our Time

I really want to read 'A Hero of our Time' by Lermontov, but I want to buy a good translation of it, as bad translations just ruin books for me and I'm quite picky. I want one that's very close to the original Russian, but also that flows well and has flare in English. I have heard mixed...

    Alexandre Dumas: The Three Musketeers

I haven't read that translation of Three Musketeers but I have read Richard Pevear's translation of Anna Karenina and I can say it's absolutely brilliant. So if he's as good in French as in Russian then definitely recommended.

Do you like to read with background noise, or need complete silence?

I can't really read with background noise, too distracting, but music is okay, especially if it goes with the mood of the book. I prefer classical music with no singing, but if there is singing in the music, preferably not in English, so that the words can't distract me.

What are you listening to Right now?

Dvorak's Sonatina for violin and piano.

Haruki Murakami: Kafka On The Shore

I LOVE Murakami, though I've only read Norwegian Wood and Kafka on the Shore, I adored both and am certainly going to read more. Kafka on the Shore left me a LITTLE empty at the end in terms of Kafka's story (although not Nakata's), but overall I thoroughly enjoyed. I'd be interested to know...

    Patrick Süskind: Perfume

The movie looks very good actually, I hadn't heard of it. I enjoyed this book overall - but I have to say I didn't get into it straight away. In fact I started it then about quarter way through gave up and before I had to give it back to the library decided to skim read through it to find out...

Suggestions: February 2007 Book of the Month.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Snow-Country-Yasunari-Kawabata/dp/0679761047/sr=1-1/qid=1165687373/ref=sr_1_1/203-9383908-5482335?ie=UTF8&s=books I would like 'Snow Country' by Yasunari Kawabata, it's short and not too difficult to read but infinitely beautiful, by a Novel prize winner.

Hitch Hiker's got most of the funniest lines ever in my opinion..

    Bad song lyrics.

Definitely true! Avril needs to seriously rethink her lyrics... Another funny one is Disturbed: 'Bring the violence, it's significant To the life if you've ever known anyone.' Could it be any more sloppily written?

Song Titles that go on Forever

Why is it generally emo songs that have long names? Where did this trend come from? Brand New, Panic!, etc...the song names are ridiculously long! BTW: Not that I'm targeting this type of music as a typical emo-hater, I actually quite like some of these bands.

    Ani DiFranco

I love Ani DiFranco!! 'Untouchable Face' and 'Little Plastic Castles' are my two favourite songs.

    Dante's Inferno

As a fan of supernatural stories, who also appreciates older texts like Shakespeare, I think it's definitely likely you would enjoy the Divine Comedy.

    Jane Austen: Pride And Prejudice

I have to say that P&P is probably Austen's best work, but I don't think her others are far inferior - I have read Emma, Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park. Emma is quite an interesting, exciting read that portrays intriguing characters, S&S is fantastic in its exploration of social and...

What books have you read more than once?

I've re-read His Dark Materials about 5 times (the whole trilogy) and I'm sad to say I re-read the first four Harry Potter books several times - though I subsequently completely went off them and never bothered with the fifth. I've also re-read a book called 'Letters from the Inside' by John...
