The Duff by Kody Keplinger was really good.
I also really liked Cassandra Claire's Mortal Instruments Series (the first three books) and her other series The Infernal Devices. They are both Romance Fantasy.
I read some of the original Grimm stories for a children's lit class I took, but I never came across "How the Children played at Slaughtering". I'm not surprised to see it there though, the original versions are so much darker than most people realize.
I find books are generally better than the movie versions, but as far as adaptations go I think they did a pretty good job with Harry Potter. They had some of the characters exactly how I imagined them. I thought Luna, Bellatrix, and Umbridge were all cast perfectly!
