Suggestions: November 2006 Book of the Month

My suggestion is White Apples by Jonathan Carroll - I've read alot of his books, but not this one. They are all excellent and I've not seen many discussions on this forum about him and I'm sure lots of you would really enjoy his books. M Some links and info to whet the appetite ...

    Can someone help?

Fantasy but not typical fantasy. I used to read nothing but fantasy - but then got a bit bored with it all being the same - two authors that got me back into reading fantasy are .. Jonathan Carroll http://www.jonathancarroll.com/ and Jeffrey Ford http://www.sfsite.com/06b/jf130.htm...

    Science-Fiction suggestions wanted. . . .

SF suggestions I'd suggest trying Brian Aldiss - novels and short stories - (one of which was used as a basis for the film AI) Robert Silverberg - many, nearly all excellent Alfred Bester - his two well known novels (Demolished Mane & The Stars My Destination) are reckoned to be two of...

If I wanted to get lost forever...

Be sure to read Titus Groan first. Gormenghast is the second in the trilogy. BTW have a look on www.abebooks.com - loads of cheap second hand copies on there, just about any book you could want to find.

    Jon Krakauer

Krakauer Into Thin Air is very good but I think Into The Wild is even better. http://outside.away.com/outside/magazine/0193/9301fdea.html Mark

    Black Hole - Charles Burns

I read a review of this in the Telegraph over the weekend and have ordered it - the review was good and other reviews I've read rave about it/him. http://www.readyourselfraw.com/profiles/burns/profile_burns.htm Has anybody here read any of the Black Hole series or other Burns work? - what...

    Discussion: Simmons, Dan: Hyperion Cantos

Thanks all for the replies - I persevered with the book over the weekend(and glad I did, thanks again) and I'm not far off finishing the first one so will continue and finish it and will come back and read the 'Fall of..' in a while. He is a good writer though I find his writing suffers...

    Discussion: Simmons, Dan: Hyperion Cantos

Hyperion(Dan Simmons) - who liked this book? I've recently started reading this (i'm about half way through) and I'm struggling a bit to maintain my interest - I don't yet get the point of all the individual stories - do they make sense in the end? I'd like someone to tell me that it'll all...

    Jorge Luis Borges

Borges I've read a few Borges books 'Labyrinths' and 'Fictions' - and really enjoyed them - I also like Italo Calvino who writes similar stuff. Have you read any of his. Mark

Umberto Eco: The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana

What I also found interesting was Yambo wondering about the Fascist attitudes presented in the books and comics and wether he had some sympathy with those attitudes at the time. Could a prejudiced person loose their prejudices by losing their memory - I presume so. I've ordered the book...

Umberto Eco: The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana

I finished it a couple of weeks ago. I did like it though I was a bit disappointed over all not quite what I expected. I was expecting alot more about how re-reading the books and comics the main character read as a young boy and man helped his rediscover his identity. However a huge amount...

    Haruki Murakami

My favourite of HM's books was Hard Boiled Wonderland .... The only other Japanese authors I've read is Ryu Murakami (no relation) though his style is very different, and Koji Suzuki - Ring (the book the film was based on), Spiral etc. Mark

The slow lingering death of fantasy writing.

In other genres e.g. thriller/crime thriller you don't get the series you get in fantasy (recurring detectives maybe) but each book is a seperate story - so I think that in this genre you're only as good as your last book, each book has to stand alone. In a fantasy series after the first book...
