Totally agree. No matter which stage of my life I have tried to read it, I have not been able to get into it at all. I don't know, maybe I'm not 'cool' enough.
After a couple of years of sporadic reading, I bought this on a whim having never heard of it (middle of last year sometime), went to a park and sat under a tree and started.
By the end of the book, I was completely enthused about reading again, and since that been varocious in my appetite...
I have read it and it was ok. An airport lounge book if ever there was, and not the type I can read all the time.
But I do like your attitude. It is far better to find the good in something than just focus on the bad (if a little difficult at times).
I bought the first 4 recently in a boxset from Amazon US. Shipped to Australia, it still cost much less than I could get each book for here separately.

I use everything and anything, and personally believe it's hard to avoid if you are writing stories set in your own time and place, though I am talking mainly character traits here, not events.
When writing I like to have music playing quietly in the background, and never rock or anything too abrasive, as this definitely has a tendency to disrupt my thought patterns. But a nice beat helps me maintain rhythm in the story.

I find the local bookstores here in Hobart just too expensive; Ellison Hawker, Dymocks, Angus & Robertson. A shame as you want specialist bookstores to thrive, but if you read 2 or 3 books a week it can get pretty expensive.
