Well, maybe. Maybe not. Here's an experiment, a bit naughty maybe, due the political restrictions. It's an experiment that could move toward a novel. You can find it at http://gildedagepart2.blogspot.com
a PS on writing backwards and forwards . . .
I realized y'day my comment was a little confusing. One more note on it from a specific example. I was saying in a letter to a friend yesterday . . .
There I was, suddenly, back at Chap 1 and saying Oh no! I don't like the entry to this...
Verrrry interesting! . . .
“Si, ” Ettie is relieved. At least he has brought the divorce issue out in the open. “non posso vivere cosi. Non sopporto questa incertezza. Non ti sopporto piu.” (I can’t live like this. I can’t stand this uncertainty. I can’t stand you.)
She stops, aghast at...
Sharing a recent development: I was making the mistake of thinking that each increment of the story, from intro thru next phase and on to the end, should be finished before I could move on. Example I once wrote 170 pages of a chapter one for a novel because of this desperation to get it "done"...
Steffee, good one! And thanks for your greeting to me. I like your photo. Writing has to be one of the loneliest things you can do, with a ferris wheel of now high and now low around: "Yes, but is it any good?" :p
yes . . . versus mystification
Seems to me you solved the problem of coherence in all the examples except this one:
Betsy seems surprised “E vuoi fare l’amore con Orlando ?(and you want to make love to Orlando?)” She sometimes thinks her sister is made of marble and has no libido.
I...
a PS on problem of clarity with foreign language . . .
Sorry! Just thot of another angle here . . . in today's movies there's a tendency to not translate foreign words (via subtitles in English). Body language, gesture, mood tend to carry a meaning, and a little mystery is good. So, perhaps...
Mendo bendo
Hi Poppy1. Mendocino County is north of San Francisco about 150 miles, 200 more to get up to Oregon border. I have some nice coast shots if you'd like to see one or two. Now I have fantasies of New Zealand, that it's a beautiful place. Where I am certainly is! Terrific...
yes, an interesting problem . . .
It's tough to talk about without being more specific. I'm writing a novel set in the Philippines and have several times brought in Tagalog, the Philippine native tongue. Usually, from context the meaning is clear. Maybe I'm using a lot less of the other...
re: foreign words . . .
Hi, Malena. I agree that foreign words and phrases should appear in italics but it seems to me providing a translation in brackets afterwards could get awkward. Suggestion: through context (replies/comments on foreign words but in English) from characters involved when...
Astounding!
Hi Ruby, I was amazed at how quickly your reply got to me. I'm still floundering around getting used to the system. Thanks for your response. I grew up in England and had relatives in Liverpool, but left England as a child. It seems this forum is world-wide, no? You must really...
Just discovered The Forum and learned a lot already. Appreciate this nicely setup discussion system AND the comments! It was here I learned about sharking outfits sniffing for meat in eyes-glazed wannabe novelists like myself. Just getting started but glad to be here! Thanks, mates!
