Solved it! Solved!! I have just come back from visiting my MIL to get some more clues. She was able to give me the name of the main character (Michael), and a google search with that added clue turned up the answer. The book is No Mercy, by Colin Forbes. Link attached...

It is set current dayish, so end of the 20th/start of the 21st century. Within the last 10-15 years kind of timeframe. And I agree about wanting to read the book, lol. If I can ever find out what it is!
