    Construction of your personal library?

And, the rug would probably capture the dust, and keep it off the books, as opposed to us kicking it up from a hardwood floor when we come in. Not to sure about the coffee pot. Maybe with a dehumidifier, it would be okay.

    Construction of your personal library?

Cedar does seem to make sense. One of the articles tartan_skirt linked to also mentioned lining shelves with conservation board. Acid free seems to be the thing. And tartan - I think we are all a little nerdy here - but in a good way! It makes life interesting! Normal is definately boring.

    Construction of your personal library?

I completely agree about the fireplace, and I luckily have such a room. My books are also in closets and piled on the floor. Unfortunately, recently some that were piled under a window got soaking wet and now are ruined. I was so upset and swore that I was going to properly store my books...

    Construction of your personal library?

How has everyone constructed their personal library. What type of shelving do you use? Is there a best wood for the job (untreated? hard? soft?) Do you have a room specifically for your library, or do you use a common area? How do you maintain it: dust, wear, tear, etc.? Should books be...

    Are you a re-reader?

I do re-read some books, but there are so many books out there that I haven't read, that I try not to do it unless I LOVE the book. I think some books also lend themselves to re-reading. Those that are complex, and finely detailed. Others are so simple, and plot driven, that I don't ever...

    June 2007 reads

Tartan_skirt, I am interested in your reaction to Frankenstein. Was it your first time reading it and what did you think? I think we all come to this book with preconceived notions, and then they get shot down. I loved it.

Can anyone compile a small list of classics that every reader should read?

Don't forget that accomplished readers should also have a number of contemporary and foreign (meaning not English) novels under their belts. I recommend: any Toni Morrison - (Paradis being my favorite, but also her most difficult) Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston - This is one of a...

    Anyone in/finished grad school?

This sounds awesome. I can't wait. My school does have a language program, so thanks for the tip. I am so afraid that I am going to be way out of my league. I was at the top of my class at my undergrad, but it wasn't an ivy league school. I feel like I didn't learn anything. And the GRE's...

You're funny. I think I will pick it up.

    help choosing a book

I've read alot of these, and I would say the easiest (since it is for a class) is the Great Gatsby (although I hate the characters in it). I found Watership down somewhat slow, and Faulkner is absolutely the hardest (but most facinating) out of the bunch. Short stories are always good to...

    Do you take book notes?

I used to pen up all my books, but then stopped, because I also like to pass books on, and I am sef-conscious about my notes. Maybe I will start a small journal. I hate when I am trying to find a quote or thought, and I have to reread everything to find it.

Khaled Hosseini: A Thousand Splendid Suns

I was wondering if this was a book worth reading. I must confess that I did not like Kite Runner, although I think the problem is that I hate the main character. The book is well written and incredibly insightful, but when you hate a main character, it kind of ruins it. He was such a whiney...
