I found Golden Goblet, Order of Phoenix and Deathly Hallows pretty much as you describe....they drag very badly in places, and in others are excellent. Unfortunately, I think that the very success of the series was BAD for the series...I'm afraid the editors at J.K. Rowling's publishers...

Searching for a mystery book... This is definitely The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. I read it many times and loved it as a child too...and I too forgot the title and author! It took several years of searching, and even then I found it by accident, as I was at the same time reading my way...
