Hey yall. I'm writing a sort of short story. I'm hoping to be able to put it in a sort of magazine or have it published in a short stories collection. It's a science fiction story..but where do I start?

Research your market. Buy the publications and find out what stories they publish - over a few publications you can guage the editor's tastes and direct your energy to pleasing them while still pleasing yourself.

but where do I start?

Grab a pen, grab some paper,.....write!

I use a monitor and keyboard.

That can be a problem; it's too tempting to delete a sentence and think about how it should read when you can simply score it out and continue rapidly with the pen.

to each his own, I think. Your "problem" is my godsend! :)

I repeat - every dead horse deserves a good beating!

I think magazines are a great place to start. I am learning, as someone said earlier, that you definitely need to target your work to the intended publication. I have many rejects simply because my work didn't appeal to the target audience of the mag.

good luck!
