Anne Bronte Book missing words

Hi everyone, hope you are having a good day.Currently I am reading the Anne Bronte book " Tenant of Wildfell hall"

Does anyone know why some of the place names in the novel are deleted.( First letter followed by a line) ? Was this the intention of the author or something lost ?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Paul

It's a common device when the author wants to portray the story as real. Writing the first letter only, gives the impression that the characters are still living in that village, town, etc. and that the writer is trying to protect their identity.
