Books to Movies?

What book or books would you like to see adapted to the big screen. I would love to see a motion picture adaptation of American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

That would be cool. I would have David Lynch direct it. Perfect!

I think the "Night Dawn Trilogy" would be great as a movie.

I heard a rumor that Terry Gilliam optioned the rights to Chris Genoa's Foop!, but I'm not sure if that's a done deal. My brother is a production manager in LA and he gives me the gossip every now and then, but we all know how reliable gossip can be! If it's true that would be an incredible film.

I'd also love to see a movie version of American Gods. Anything by Neil Gaimen would translate great to film. Speaking of Gilliam, I know he was working on a Good Omens adaptation, but I think funding fell through.

I would like to see either R.E.Feist's Serphentwar saga as a movie or the redemption of althalus by David and Leigh Eddings (emerald would be cool)

Fantasy movies require one hell of a budget to make them work, unfortunately. I'd love to see some of my favourites made into a movie (Tigana would be awesome!), but I can't see the market being big enough to warrant the necessary budget - look at how long it took LOTR to be made. But perhaps in time it'll happen, I mean look at all the comic book movies currently being made.

I don't understand why more books aren't adapted. Especially at the moment where the trend appears to be remakes of 'classics' (I don't consider the original 'Bad News Bears' to be a classic... next thing you know they'll be remaking 'Harry and the Hendersons') and one hell of a lot of sequels (although I'm dying to see the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean).

These all sound great, providing they stick to the book and don't make too many changes. The more I think about it, a classic like The Stars My Destination or a remake of the movie fahrenheit 451 would be cool. I know it takes alot of work and money but that's what makes sci-fi/fantasy moveis so great. ;)

The Starrigger Series - John DeChancie
The first three Dragon Riders of Pern books
Honor Harrington - David Weber
The Stainless Steel Rat and HomeWolrd Trilogy- Harry Harrison
Swan Song - Robert McCammon

I would love to see an updated, cinema release of Dune.

I think the guy that did the LOTR would do a good job of it. Or maybe Lucas, if he hires out the dialogue.

What's wrong with the old one? And please, not Lucas

The special effects are a little hokie, and I would like to see what they could do with it now. It would be a great excuse to see it again!

I'd like to see sci-fi channel take on David Brin's Uplift series ... imagine dolphins and chimpanzees as featured characters! No way would this work through as a movie, but possibly a series ...

A more realistic expectation would be John Varley's Red Thunder, unless he has been completely alienated by Hollywood.

What would really impress me would be The Mote in God's Eye ... Star Trek done right.

I would also like to see a modern version of this - I would really love to see the special fx that they'll use and their interpretation of how the planet looked.

I think the guy that did the LOTR would do a good job of it..
Peter Jackson would do a great job, IMHO (but then again, my HO is somewhat bias ;) )

Technically there is an updated version of Dune for the small screen anyways and Children of Dune. They're some of the big ones SciFi Channel poured money into for TV. A lot better than their average garbage ala "Boa vs. Python vs. King Cobra vs. Silent Predators vs. Snakehead Terror vs..."--well you know what I mean.

Children of Dune if memory serves had some decent action scenes in it. Matrix-feel to them. The mini-series was released in 2003. So far though none of them have really been gripping as a movie-going experience though. Seeing the worms on the big screen would be nice.

The Mote in God's Eye would be great, but wishful thinking. Niven and Pournelle rule. I thought The sequel was good too, The Gripping Hand. I'm really surprised we haven't seen a big screen Dragonriders of Pern movie, unless McCaffrey wants an arm and a leg for the rights. And if she did, I wouldn't blame her.

I always wanted to see a good version of Dinotopia or Foster's Dinotopia Lost. They released that TV crap but meh. Put some big money into Dinotopia Lost, with the talking raptor who is extremely fast and knows martial arts, or the scenes with the guys riding on the tyrannosaurs. The scene where they're on the brachiosaurs standing against the waters rushing in would be wild too.

The City and the Stars. It has the potential for awesome visuals, and movie technology has reached a point where it could be done.

The WB had the Dragonriders of Pern all set up as a series, but they canned it when the WB and the director had disagreements on the dialoug for the show. The WB wanted it to be more like Buffy in dialoug so that those fans would tune in, and the director wouldnt do it, he wanted it to be more like the books. I'm glad he stood his ground, but I wish they would try again.
