Most of the fiction I buy, I can only get in paperback. If it's a classic I can get in hardback, then I'll get that if the price difference isn't too great. Non-fiction tends to be in hardback.

I do cave when it is a book I'm looking forward to, and if I own one part of a series in a given format, I buy the rest in that format. Of course, I do sometimes regret being so anxious like with the Baroque Cycle. They really didn't live up to Cryptonomicon.

I'm gonna cheat and say Trade Paperback. I consider this to be the pleasent bridge between the harshness of the rigid hardcover and the delicate stature of the mass market paperback. Trade paperbacks almost always have the most pleasing appearance to me as well. Explicitly I guess they are softback but I feel they do deserve to be considered seperately.

I am firmly split on this vacuous issue.

Oh, I never meant for this one to be rocket science material. It's more of a "getting to know you" type of deal. Some good substantive "issues" would be a good thing to discuss, by all means, feel free to start one. ;)

I really dislike hard backs for many reasons!

*They are too big to carry around with you

*they take too much space up

*they are overpriced

*they are hard and unfriendly

*they are ungainly to hold while reading

*and worst of all! That damn dust jacket slides all over the place!

AGREE With Wabbit! Saved me writing it... ta :D

Yeah, paperbacks are just generally easier. But sometimes it's nice to have a hardback simply because it's so easy to get paperbacks ruined and covers bent and stuff like that.

I like the look and feel of a hardback. Heft. Trade paperbacks are great, too, but I prefer hardbound over paperback. I read books over and over again if they are worthy of such, so paperbacks tend to get worn out easier, the spine cracks, pages and cover bend, etc. But dustjackets... throw those suckers away; what a waste of money for simple eye candy.

I'm right with you, Ions. Trade paperbacks. I really do not care at all for mass markets paperbacks and will not buy them. I'm not fond of hardbacks due to all of the reasons mentioned about. Trade paperbacks are the happy medium between the two that I like.

Now Trade paperback is my least favourite, it has none of the advantages of a hardback (rigid cover etc) and it has the disadvantage of size over a paperback.

I prefer paperbacks because the hard cover books are just too bulky to carry around, and I can never get comfortable with a hard covers.. especially when I'm reading in bed.

First you've gotta tuck it under the covers and give it a goodnight kiss... tell the book how much she means to you... tell her she's beautiful, rub her spine... and then open her up and have a go!

I nominate this for most amusing post of the month. It's early days in August but I'm confident it will last.

I completely agree. I'm a "cuddle" reader, and I like to get all comfy when I'm reading. Speaking of which - my bed and book are calling my name right now...

I always try to find the hardback for my absolute favorite books. It may sound silly, but if I love a book, I tell myself: "I have to find the hardback edition!!" :p :) :p :)

O.k., i just realized a drawback with paperbacks that is very annoying. Have you ever purchased a brand new one, only to leave it so that the front cover is bent backwards? You then can't straighten out all that well and now you have a giatn crease down the front of it, it's just annoying to me.

That is an annoyance, SFG75, but I'm very careful with my books so that doesn't usually happen to me.

Me, I prefer paperbacks. I find them easier to read and hold. Plus, the covers on hardcover books (I'm sure there's a proper term for them - slip covers, maybe?) annoy the hell out of me. Whenever I read a hardcover, I take off that cover before I start, and only put it back on when I'm done reading.
