Robin Hobb's 'Liveship Traders'

I just bought the first book of Robin Hobb's 'Liveship Traders' trilogy as I've heard a lot about these books and was really interested to read them..can anyone tell me if it's okay to read the Liveship series without having read the Assassin books beforehand? Will it all be a bit confusing or is it not necessary to read the other three first..?
And, also, what do people think of these books? What are their strengths/weaknesses?
Thanks! :)

My opinion is that it's fine as nothing in the Assassin Trilogy is essential or even needful to know to aid in understanding the Liveship Trilogy... I hope that make sense to you 'cos i'm not sure it does to me! lol! :)

The Liveship Trilogy is a good read though i found it a little long winded in places.

It's not necessary to read The Farseer Trilogy first but it is recommended as there are some references that are applicable when reading them in order:

The Farseer Trilogy

Liveship Traders Trilogy

Tawnyman Trilogy

Tawnyman shouldn't read tuntil reading Farseer - it is simplytbest to read The Farseer Trilogy first if possible, as a whol eI think's it's the best series, hoeever, some of Hobb's best writing IMHO is found within Live Ship Traders IMHO.

TawnyMan was solid, but not something I rave about.

Personally I like the possibilities of her latest work, Shaman's Crossing.

Yeah, I am waiting for her new book to come out in paperback and I'll definately be getting it, cause it looks very good. :)

I don't think it's necessary to read the Farseer trilogy first, but as Ainulindale said, it is recommended.

I enjoyed both trilogies immensely. I haven't read the Tawny man series yet, but will do at some point.

I believe you'll get more out of Liveships if you have already read Farseer, but no, it's not essential.

It's good to read things in order just for the thrill of guessing games and spotting clues and also for the amazement of how Hobb plants things here and there! But yes you can read Liveship first before Farseer. But definitely read Farseer before Tawny Man. They all link up though, so it's all good!

Come back here and discuss when you're done with Liveship! I love them even as a stand alone.

I started reading Liveship before I realized that Farseer and Tawny Man are set in the same world. I just finished Ship of Destiny yesterday and I have yet to pick up the other two series as the best local used book store hasn't had the first books in. I absolutely LOVED Liveship. I think it's fabulously written and I really couldn't find a single fault with it (and this is coming from an extremely picky reader).
I was actually planning on posting a thread with this question but then I saw this thread so... I was curious as to how similar Liveship is to Farseer and Tawny Man. From what I've seen I seems like the only similarity is the map in the front of the book but I would love it if they were a bit more interconnected.

OMG if you loved Liveship then you're in for a ride with Farseer and Tawny Man!!!! :D

Ahem.

The typical Hobb fan loves Fitz and Fool's story (Farseer/TM) more than Liveship. So if you're like me who loves them all... ah well, we're the lucky ones. ;)

From what I've seen I seems like the only similarity is the map in the front of the book but I would love it if they were a bit more interconnected.

 : x ... read them now!
