Henri Charrière: Papillion

I read 'Papillion' a few months ago and I thoroughly enjoyed. It would be rather droll of me to label it 'pure-escapism', but that's what it is, so that's what I'll label it.

It doesn't tax the brain-cells that you're all losing so quickly, but it does keep you riveted. Papillion is a charcter and a half and his escapades are true/false - depending on whether you believe an ex-con/person/STOP JUDGING PEOPLE!

It's a perfect summer read and anyone who likes a good ol' adventure story will love it.

To All Those Who've Read It Before:

What's you favorite part? I loved the part
he spent with the natives - tapping the two sisters! What a doGG!

I think my favourite part was escaping from prison, but it was so long ago I can't remember much. There is a second part, Bank, where he joins a gang to do a bank job. You'd think after what he'd been through, he'd stayed away.

I read this book many years ago and i cant remember the details but i liked it a lot at the time. A good adventure story, true or not. The second part, Bank, is also good but not as memorable as Papillion.

The movie with Dustin Hoffman and Steve Mcqueen is also definetly worth a watch. A great movie, even if they had to cut down a lot on the story. The book is too long for one movie.

the movie is pretty decent. it has steve mcqueen.

I was wondering if they made a movie...I'll have to see if I can find it. Does the movie involve the episode hidden within my oh-so-thoughtful spoiler?

Thanks for the suggestion. I saw the movie years ago, and didn't know it was a book. It sounds like something I'd enjoy.

It's a simple, well-written, charming adventure story. If you like the sound of that, then you will indeed enjoy the book.

It's so long since I read this but I did love it. As Krunk'd says, it's charming. Maybe I haven't remember correctly, but isn't it based on a true story?

Motorbike? I think you've got the wrong Steve McQueen film and it's not even Christmas.:D

...and I just adore the bit near the end where the big ufo comes down and starts playing tunes....
