The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan

I have read quite a few good books lately this one being the one i would recomend most. I really enjoyed this book. i don't really have much to say other than that just thought it would make a nice opening post.

in turn can anyone recomend anything back

Hello thebookworm, and welcome to thebookforum!

Loved it, did you? Well, Halo also loved it, and you're now her new best friend. :D

What other books did you like?

In return, I recommend Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle books, which start with A Wizard of Earthsea.

hi direstraits thanks for the recomendation.

"What other books did you like?"

let me see... oh yes I read Orcs by Stan Nicholls - a good read liked the fact that it wasn't your usual portrayal of nasty bloodthirsty creatures. the auther humanised the charecters which was good

I also read "Quicksilver rising" and "Quicksilver zenith" by the same auther and am eagerly awaiting the sequal

i absolutly love this trilogy, no elves, no dwarves, just magic, and peeps, and a clever plot, and an amazing cast of characters.

I'd recomend it to anyone.

i have also heard that she plans on writting her next couple of books in a totally different world which will be interesting to see if she gets stuck in a rut for character types and plot stuff...

:p at ds! And are you feeling quite alright? I only ask because you didn't recommend something by Guy Gavriel Kay.

Welcome, the bookworm! As ds said, I loved this trilogy. I will be very interested to read Canavan's next books. :)

me 2 :p

Hey, I'm also new, just joined today, and I really love the black magician trilogy. I absolutely HAVE to read her next books, I'm soo curious!

The thing I loved most about her writing style, is that you absolutely can not predict what is going to happen. I often read books which are so predictable, that I could have wrote it myself.

He hasn't been paying my commission of late, so no mention of him for now. :)

I've heared that Canavan doesn't want to continue in the Black Magician world for her next couple of books, she wants to do something new in the hope of not getting in a rut like R. Fiest but i am still looking forward to reading it whereever it is set. :)

hey, i read the magician's trilogy one or two month ago and i have to say that i really loved it. i just couldn't stop reading. the story was surprising and you couldn't guess what will happen next.
i liked the third book the most and of course akkarin.
i think it's good that Trudi Canavan stops this series after the third book, because i don't like those endless series and of course i will read her next books!

Well, you don't have *too* long to wait until Trudi Canavan's next book and it starts a brand new series!

Titled Priestess of the White, it is the first book in the Age of the Five series and is published by Orbit in the UK February 2006.

Looking forward to that one!

I too loved The Black Magician Triology, I thought it was wonderfully written, without being too over the top.

I can't wait till her next book is out, only 6 months to go

I read this trilogy in paperback, as an adult book (or at least Young Adult). I was surprised while in Waterstones yesterday to see the first book re-packaged with a new hardback cover in the Children's section! It had the rather annoying label of "Similar to Harry Potter so if you liked that you'll like this" on it (or words to that effect). It's nothing like Harry Potter!

And what's all this repackaging it as a kids' book? Has it been edited/abridged? It's also a bit of a rip-off to reissue it back into hardback, when it's been out in paperback for ages. I find all this rather bizarre.

Apparently it hasn't been edited or anything. Same book but hardcover. Published by Atom, which is the children's/YA's branch of Orbit.

The 'similar to Harry Potter' is likely come about because of the period in the second book when it describes the lessons etc of the young mages. I did actually think 'hmmm, bit Harry Potter' when I read it, but only that bit - not any of the other bits.

I was thinking of buying it - seems I can do so with me peace of mind intact. Will do so once my economy can shoulder it.

I totally love the covers of the newest paperback version. They are so simple with the cowled mage looking awesome :D And I only recently saw the hardcover editions where the background behind the mage has been coloured and has been given some designs, which I haven't looked closely at but it looked like arcan diagrams or somesuch. Very tasteful. And now I can't decide which kind I prefer :p

Which set of covers do you guys prefer?

The new hardback cover is lovely, but I think that I too prefer the stark, black and white simplicity of the paperbacks. They're so uncluttered and striking.

BTW, I had another look in Waterstone's yesterday, and I was wrong about the Harry Potter thing. It actually said something like "In the tradition of Garth Nix's Sabriel", which I think is even more off the mark! As magemanda pointed out, there are some HP similarities, but Sabriel? Well, it's fantasy I suppose, and we all know that's all the same.

Psh they just need to sell books, we all know how accurate sellers are in the appraisal of their own goods.

I think I too prefer the paperbacks, though I am quite taken with the hardcovers, the colouring isn't so much that it gets obnoxious... ah well. I probably won't get around to buying them till next month when the blessed paycheck has arrived.

I read the first one and waas quite impressed, keep meaning to go back to the Library and get the second and third ones out. It is a pretty enjoyable read, keeps a nice pace to it throughout and then throws you that curveball at the end of the first book.
