Looking for a Fantasy book by a Canadian author

Hi all,

I am in need of a good Fantasy book by a Canadian author. At the end of this semester, I have to do a sort of novel study for my Grade 11 English class. It will involve...seminars... D: I'm getting the whole choosing thing out of the way early so that I can have the book long before I need it. Also because I'm in the mood to read something. :p

So basically, it'd be nice to get some suggestions about some great fantasy authors from Canada, whose books I can explain easily to a class that isn't the most mature.

Thanks a lot!

Margaret Atwood is a good Canadian author, she has some great fantasy stories but I'm not sure if they fit into the maturity range you are looking for.

Guy Gavriel Kay! I can't recommend his books highly enough and I know there are several other TBFers who feel the same. A good place to start is Tigana, an excellent stand alone novel. Although I haven't read them, I have also heard that his Fionavar Tapestry books are quite good.

You beat me to the punch!!! Yes - read Tigana. It's a one-book fantasy whereas his other work are trilogies. The latter are very good, but the rest of the class might get bored/confused if you are discussing multiple books or if you discuss only one book of a trilogy.

When you've read it read the Tigana thread that's in the fantasy section (do a search). Most of it is contained within spoilers, so be sure to use them when you're done too. We can discuss it and help you out if you like! I love this book!!! :)

Okay, thanks a lot! I'll check Tigana out.

My English teacher reccomended some of Margaret Atwood's books, but I would think that a lot of people would be doing them, as not too many people in my class seem to know of many Canadian authors (then again, most people in my classes aren't into reading).

You may want to look into Steven Erikson's books. I haven't read any myself but I know he's Canadian :p

Don Bassingthwaite has written for Wizards of the Coast - The Yellow Silk is published in the Forgotten Realms setting, not advanced story-telling, and since I'm not sure which age-group a grade 11 entails I'll include it.

Lisa Smedman has written books for Wizards of the Coast as well. I will recommend the House of Serpents trilogy - though the third isn't out yet. She has also written some in the Shadowrun setting, and some in her own setting - look her up, she writes good plots.

Ed Greenwood is another Wizards of the Coast writer, but, but but, he's possibly one of the worst writers they have ever employed. Sadly he's the major brains behind the setting itself (which is brilliant) so fans of FR will have to tolerate his novels. If you feel like bashing a book and a writer in your project, then Greenwood is your thing.

Instead of making my list any longer I'll refer you to this site, which lists a multitude of Canadian writers of Fantastic Fiction - so here you go: http://www.geocities.com/canadian_sf/pages/author.htm

Good luck with your project :)

If memory serves, R. Scott Bakker (Prince of Nothing series) is Canadian and his books are top-notch Fantasy!
