How often do you buy books?

I haven't bought a book for so long - I am still waiting to be paid and also for my student loan to come which should be in the next week or so! Whoohoo! :D I can't wait to treat myself to a new book - I have been using the library a lot, which is no bad thing, but I love new books and bookshops too. Not long now! When I do have money I do tend to go a bit mad over books - I also make the excuse that they are for uni or educational purposes, but most are just for fun.
 
I buy them around once a month. It is mostly used or from the library sale or discounted books as brand new books are getting much too expensive. But I do buy those too lol.
 
Before I started university my calculations showed that I spent about 250 £ a year on books. I don't know what it is now - probably somewhat less on leisure reading but the total will have gone up due to the study books.

It differs greatly how far between my book buys are. Ordered a stack from Amazon on Sept. 10th and around the same time I won an auction on eBay - I'm currently bidding on another.

The previous Amazon order was placed around mid-August, and the one before that was in late June sometime. I came home having inadvertently bought 4 books in my local shop because they had 4 for xxx, one of those sales... I hate it, the books become so cheap I have to buy something :p

Generally I seldom buy books in the store because books are horribly expensive in Denmark - but when there are sales you can definitely expect to find me there :p
 
It's so nice to hear how totally normal I am (well, relatively speaking), I was starting to think I was some book crazed shopaholic or something. I struggle to walk passed a bookshop without buying anything, each time I go into town I tend to look around the charity shops at their second hand books - always love to grab a bargain, but I also have the most amazing pile of books waiting to be read. (Those in any doubt of the sincerity of that last statement can see the evidence here)

I do the same as you. :) Every Christmas when my mum asks me what I want for Christmas, I tell her book vouchers. Like you, I have a huge stack waiting to be read, but that doesn't stop me from buying more and adding them to the stack. ;)
 
heh I just made another buy on eBay. Katharine Kerr's 'A time of...' series. 4 quid for all four books - including shipping from UK to Denmark, I'm happy :D

An hour and a half to two hour movie runs $6 to $10 without the popcorn, soda, candy, etc. So, going with a friend costs a little over $30. And this is for an hour and a half to two hours of entertainment... which is not cheap. I have no problem forking out $6 for a new paperback, or even $30 for a new hardbound, for hours and hours of reading entertainment. And if I want popcorn, soda, candy, etc., I can just snag some from the kitchen.
 
So true, sirmyk, of course 10 $ is the cheapest tickets in my local cinema and normally paperbacks cost the equivalent of 16 $. I haven't been to the movies of my own accord in ages. My boyfriend took me to the movies this summer, but before that I think the last time I was in the movies was last summer :p

Books are by far cheaper, and in a few minutes I'll be adding another eBay purchase to my list of books... So heh I buy a lot :p
 
I have been to exactly one movie since seeing The Incredibles, and that was March of the Penguins (too cute) Give me a free library book ANYDAY!
 
I haven't been to the cinema in over a year, which reminds me that I'm still paying my £10 subscription unnecessarily. :mad:

It all depends on when a bargain presents itself. I go to the library once a week, and I always check their sale cart. I have a Zooba membership, so I buy one new book a month that way. The next book coming will be Fast Food Nation..
 
I have so many books piled and waiting to be read, but what do I do?? I visit this wonderful forum and see what people have read and buy more ;)

I so agree!!! Books have far better value. It's way too much money to go to a 2 hour(or less) movie and the popcorn and drinks are so expensive there it's ridiculous. I'd rather buy a book,(or go to the library ;) ) and most movies are based on books anyways so books are better!!! I did go see Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Star Wars Episode III though but that's all the movies for me probably ever lol. I just watch them on tv or dvd. Whoops sorry for the rant I will stop rambling now. :D
 
not often

i think i dont buy books very often out of habit. my mother never really let me buy books when i was younger since i had a library available.. it was just a way she'd save money. i dont think she cares so much anymore though.. i guess in a way it doesn't help that the book stores around here aren't the greatest.

most of the books that i've read the past two years are still sitting around my room, unread. i guess i end up reading books i took out of a library much quicker than books i bought.. i guess i almost need a 'due date' to push me
 
aye, i generally do the same thing. i couldn't find Virgin Suicides in my school library and in a couple of stores. damn censorship.
