Hi everyone
Just wanted to introduce myself, my name is Joanna, late 20's, I have always loved books and reading. I read a lot of YA books (I will soon be finishing teacher's college so I like to keep up
) and current fiction (mystery, literary etc.) I have also lately discovered Project Gutenberg and been reading a ton of their stuff on my Palm Handheld. I was amazed at just what is in the public domain now---a lot more than just Shakespeare and Dickens (both of whom I love, btw). Current reads:
Gutenberg texts on my Palm Handheld right now are mostly early 20th century mystery: Mary Roberts Rinehart. John Buchan, Maurice LeBlanc, Agatha Christie...all on my Palm Handheld, for free, from Project Gutenberg. Also am re-reading Wuthering Heights, which was the first classic I ever enjoyed, and which I am enjoying again.
YA: Just finished the first volume of John Marsden's Tomorrow, When the War Began series. It is highly acclaimed here (I am in NZ for the year) and the kids love it, but I was less impressed than I thought I would be and will likely not read future ones. Also, reading some of Pratchett's YA stuff, and re-reading Pullman's His Dark Materials. I have only ever read the first Anne of Green Gables and plan to get the other ones from Gutenberg when I finish what's on there right now. Perhaps I will load them on my handheld to read on my plane ride back to Canada in December.
Contemporary/Mystery: Reading a used bookstore Sara Paretsky right now. Just finished two of Nora Robert's J.D. Robb books. I also have Robert Harris' Pompeii on my TBR shelf, and I plan to read some more Elizabeth Knox and Fiona Kidman while I am still in New Zealand.
Anyway, it's great to be here. Is there a good thread to discuss classics? I would love to hook up with other Project Gutenberg fans and compare notes on what they are reading. There are so many books there, it would be nice to have a "best of" recommendations thread. I saw the thread listing the various sites, but I would love a discussion thread too for people who USE the sites
