I'm agreeing with you and laughing, too! Your slip of the knife might make a great book title someday.
I think you'll find that was deliberate.

If people are feeling intimidated about starting a new thread there's a much much bigger problem we need to be dealing with here than having a few stickies about just bought, am reading, just finished.....

I shall now go ask that very question in General Chat. Maybe a poll?

Ya know, I'm no fledgling myself, but just the thought getting my hand slapped down every time I raise it is kind of wearying. I've never met a place with so many rules and rulekeepers (although I have to admit that they haven't driven me away yet, nor am I threatening to go.)

So that's your reaction too!
And I guess I'll leave it at that. :(

Please don't leave it at that. I couldn't tell what you were saying.

Elaborate please?

Edit:

I couldn't tell if you were eeking at me or eeking with me! :D

I was trying to get away with as few words as possible, since I wasn't sure I wanted to post in the first place, and I guess I cut it too fine.

"So you have that reaction too." I meant that I too also share your reaction, not that I'm observing that you too have the same reaction as others.

"And I guess I'll leave it at that" is what this post will expand upon, but as briefly as I can.

It seems to me the mods are pretty unobtrusive and go about doing their job with a good nature and the best interests of the forum at heart. I notice more especially the volunteer groundskeepers who step in to correct someone's misstep -- not searching first, similar thread, off topic, etc. It seems to me that those interventions are often unecessarily 'vigorous,' to carefully choose a word, and that some/most/all could be taken care of by a PM to the mods whose job it is, instead of by direct member action. I trust the mods to groom the site as they see fit and I'm willing to let transgressions slide until a mod can get around to them. Either way, as long as we are interested in keeping people coming to the site (I assume) I think we should be polite and helpful to them instead of accusatory. That's just good customer relations. Like smiling. :)

Beautifully put and well explained. Thank you, Peder.

At least one of our 'voluntary groundskeepers' sounded as if s/he'd be happier if some of us went back away!

Too bad for s/him. :p

StillILearn,
I love that word! I just love it! :) :) :) :) :)
A very neat addition to the language!
But this post is verging on spam, so whoosh....
I'm outta here, J/k J/k

Thank you. And I'm off to spam some other thread now.

Hi Moto,

It is being discussed, but no firm conclusions have been drawn yet. I am happy to move the reviews from the 'Just Finished Reading' thread into the discussion about that particular book, or to create a new thread if none exists but this is just one option being considered.

Thanks Ice.

Perhaps there needs to be a sticky that lists what's being considered or discussed by the mods, and what final action will or will not be taken?

I know there are two threads of mine that were closed for review. I have no way of knowing what's been decided unless I ask. I occassionally get pm's asking me what the status of a closed thread is, and I usually have no idea.

Just another suggestion.

If we're counting (and even if we're not), for the record I agree with Moto and others that the Currently Reading/Just finished threads are redundant. Of course, at least they are about books, which is more than we can say for a lot of threads...

If people want to keep track of what others are reading over a longer period, may I suggest a thread like this?

It wouldn't work this way, because you can't edit your posts anymore after 15 minutes.

Ok, we have decided to open up a poll for each of the threads. Each poll will run for 14 days to give everyone ample time to vote and all votes are confidential. The keep the thread as it is and the keep the thread but remove the sticky options will be added together in order to determine whether or not people want the particular thread to remain. Likewise in the I just finished reading thread, the Delete and the move the posts to the relevant discussion will also be added together.

All the threads have been voted on in favour of deletion. The final votes are as follows:

Currently Reading:
Keep: 9
Delete: 25
Review: 9
(the top two threads have been merged, as mentioned previously)

Recently Purchased:
Keep: 14
Delete: 17
Review: 8
(the top two threads have been merged, as mentioned previously)

I Just Finished Reading:
Keep: 19
Delete: 25
(the top two and bottom two threads have been merged, as mentioned previously)

The only thread for which I am finding the results of the poll slightly contentious is the Recently Purchased thread. In my mind, those people who voted to Review the thread each month and delete the older posts should also be added to the Keep the thread total, as they still want to see it exist, just to have the older posts removed. However this wasn't stated at the outset so I would like to get another opinion before this thread remains open.

The Moderators will now decide precisely what to do with the threads. Many thanks for taking the time to vote.

After discussion, the Recently purchased thread is to remain as it is. The results from the option Review the thread each month and delete the older posts have been added to the total for keeping the thread. Thus the results were as follows:

Recently Purchased:
Keep: 22
Delete: 17

Of those 22, the votes were broken down as follows:

Keep the thread as it is: 11
Keep the thread but remove the 'sticky': 3
Review the thread each month and delete the older posts: 8

Therefore the thread is to remain as it is. The Currently Reading and I Just finished reading threads have been locked and the Moderators are deliberating on what action to take. Any book reviews/comments in I Just finished reading will be moved to relevant discussions when time allows.
