Currently Reading/I Just Finished Reading - WHY???

Hey Ice, would people be interested in renaming 'Recently Purchased' to 'Recent Additions to my TBR'? This way people can talk about all the books they've just discovered without going into threads with possible spoilers.

OH. I haven't read the whole thread but the closing of those two stickies is a disappointment to me. I frequently checked both. :(

How it pays to check all the new posts. This conversation about these threads has been going on since September 30th and did not really end for about/at least 6 weeks. Everybody who was active pretty much had a fair chance to voice in on this and vote accordingly.

What you should see now is instead of somebody putting in a quick "I just finished reading Lolita" they will now go to the thread for the book, or author and post there. In theory this should help boost actual book discussion. In theory.

Bottomline Moto I liked the threads and there was no harm in having them. Locking them has lessened this forum. They were extremely popular in both posts and views. Why shut something down that's successful? That's rhetorical.

I'll second that.

The flip side of the coin on that is this:

Closing the threads did not detract from the forum, having them open did.

Those threads provided an easy, and lazy place to post information and book related stuff in a thread that did nothing to promote anything more than a simple statement.

By posting a comment in a specific thread like "Lolita" a simple sentence might generate conversation and discussion. Posting the same comment in "I just finished reading" would most likely get glossed over and not promote anything because the next comment might be about "Harry Potter".

I just asked a few questions and the mods put it up for a vote, and the majority of forum members, including the mods made the final decision.

Perhaps in a month or two a follow-up question could be asked about whether or not the correct decision was made? I'll let one of you guys (rogue or ions) take on that task....;)

I think this is a good idea. If after a couple of months people are still not satisfied then there is the possibility that these threads can be opened back up. I think Moto has a good theory, but it needs testing and this is the only way to do it. Clearly the majority of forum members who this matters to are interested in doing this according to the polls. So why don't we just wait and see how it goes.

As you know, there was a poll for each of the three "stickies" in General Book Discussion. These polls were open for a few weeks, which gave everyone ample time to vote. The moderators then acted according to the majority decision for each thread, deleting or keeping them as appropriate. These decisions are viewed as final by the moderating team.
