How soon after one book do you start your next?

I've just finished "Coma" this evening, but I'm not ready to start another straight away. I'm still too wrapped up in the world I've just been reading. Will probably wait until I pick up a copy of "The Shipping News" this weekend.

What does everyone else do?

On the same day if I don't finish the book too late in the evening, sometimes just minutes after I've turned the last page. I'm a compulsive reader...:)

I start almost immediately. When nearing the end of the last book on my pile, I'm already thinking of what to read next.

I have so many other things to do that when I do finally finish a book I am forced to wait a bit before I start the next. I dearly love to sit down in the morning (preferably in the fall with a good fire going) and read a book cover to cover, eat lunch, and pick up the next in the series or the next one I purchased. (Hey, lets face it, the last book I read cover to cover was "The Lonely Firefly" by Eric Carle--four times in a row.) However, barring the astronimical chances of that I read when I can and start another as soon as I can manage it. ;)

I've usually started my next book the following evening.

BTW, welcome to The Book Forum Prolixic.

Depends where I have finished the book. If I've finished it in bed I normally wait until the next day but if I finish before bed time I always start a new book.

When I'm getting close to the end of a book, I make sure I have another one close at hand. I almost always go from one to another.

Pretty much straight from one to the next. Unfortunately being in my last year of school, exams throw a spanner in the works.
It's so tempting to choose a new book over maths revision!

I understand completely, Amy. When I was in school, immediately after my last exam in the semester I'd run out and buy a book. I couldn't enjoy reading my own books during the semester knowing I was supposed to be studying.

Depends on the book, some need to ferment a bit before I start the next, so I end up on the internet or reading magazines until I'm ready to start the next one. The more fluffier fare, I can read 3 of those in a day and start the next just a soon as I shelve the last one.

Congrats to Kaz for officially resurrecting one of the oldest threads in the forum!! :D

Personally, i start new books straight after the previous one, especially if it is a series and i have more than one to read - i always plan a few books in advance what im going to read next, unless interupted by exciting new purchases!!

I read a new book right after I finish the old one :) I like to mix it up though and mostly read something different to what has gone before. If I read a SF, for example, I will read a fantasy.

You know who

I would like to read one book after the other, however I only own twelve books. I've read them all more than once.

I'm heading down to the library now to register and see if I can pick up some good books to read. :)

Usually at least an hour, because I want to get up and do something. Even when I'm in the middle of a book, I'll rarely read more than two or three chapters (or read for an hour straight) before getting up to do something, even if only for a few minutes.

But I'll often wait until the next day, just to take a break.

I just start the next one straight away. Unless I stayed up late to finish the last one, in whilch case I go to bed instead. But I can't not have a book to read. I'd have to talk to people at work instead of sit in the break room with my book. That would not do at all.

If at home, I'll startthe next day. When I feel I'll finish a book while commuting to and from work I'll carry a reserve book which I begin immediately. Currently my reserve book is The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

I always have to take a little bit of time to just "digest" the book. I'd probably start another one the next day - or maybe even sooner if I was feeling relaxed enough. It just feels wrong to read two books in the same day though - think of your morals!!!! LOL

I am actually having a real blip in my reading at the moment. It's taking me longer to get through books, and I am going for days (even weeks) before picking up the next one. This is incredibly unusual for me, and I think it's because I've been distracted with some really complex crap that's been going on at work, and it has effected me emotionally.

Interesting though - I always thought that I read to relax. Now I realise I actually have to be relatively relaxed to be able to enjoy it in the first place.
