Book nerd level

Time to confess: how much of a book nerd are you? What weird things do you do that make people look at you funny, even if they love books as much as you do – if you dare admit to them? ;)

With the risk of being the only one, I’ll go first: I catalogue my books when I’ve read them, in a rather extensive system of subjects/categories, each book to as many groups as it deserves. There are e.g. categories for different countries, different historical periods, “generational novels”, funny books, dystopias, noir, and topics like reading, writing, love, paranoia, stars, on the road, at sea, in the forest... and on, and on.

It’s a rather large document. Sometime in the future I’ll make my own web site, and then I’ll cross-reference the document :rolleyes: and put it out there, for the benefit of several other book nerds. :cool:

Tough question......:confused: ......I can read just about anywhere in any given situation. Standing in line somewhere, reading at the park, etc. I'd say that's been the only thing that qualifies in that regard.
 
I always use lighter fluid and razor blades to scrape off sticky stuff from books I buy second-hand because I want my books to be MY books--pretty and undamaged by the world. But then, I tend to write in my books...it's an odd possessorship thing I guess.
 
I guess one thing that I do that is odd is that most times when I get a book from a bookstore, not a second hand one, is that I get a new bookmark to go with my new book. And it has to go with the new book, ie, the tassel at the end has to coordinate with my book. I also tend to bring more reading material on vacation than is necessary. For example, I will always bring whatever books I am presently reading plus whatever I might read next with me along. So if I am reading four books at one time, I will bring those four books and then I will bring four more books to replace each one of those books. I know it's nuts, but that is who I am. :rolleyes: :cool:

I also like to have my books a certain way, including my library books, ie brand new or almost brand new books or are barely broken into. :confused:

That works? :confused: I absolutely HATE that stuff they put on the back of 'em. You either have to be very careful and take the same amount of time it would take to do brain surgery, or you rip it and you're left with something that looks horrible on the back.:mad: They should at least put the price sticky on the inside page or use less adhesive that is so darn terrible to get off. The only thing more annoying than these stickies are those plastic twistie-tie things children's toys makers use.
 
I can't pick up a new book (even second-hand) without gently fanning the pages and taking a sniff. And I keep a database of all the books I have but it's not an extensive one - mainly author, title, genre, date published, hard/softback. I also include books that I want to get too.

And I rarely buy a second-book that is tatty - can't abide buying books that have had their covers destroyed or snipped in any way. And I will never lay a book open face-down nor turn the corner down to mark my place - that's what bookmarks are for.
 
I spray with furniture polish the Covers of 2nd hand books to clean them, and rub the page edges with a rubber (eraser) makes the nice and clean (hold the book tightly closed if you do this) brings the book up a treat, a 2nd hand book seller told me to do this :D
I also spray my paper book marks with perfume makes even old books smell lovely ;)
 
Doodle - I LOVE the smell of all books whether old or new. I sniff every book I read about 20 times during. I tend to sit on my stairs (bookcase goes up the entire stairway) and gaze adoringly at my books, touch them, etc. Sick but true.
 
i have all my books listed alphabetically on a word document and the ones that i have in my dorm with me are in purple and the ones i've lent to people are in orange with the person's name next to it.

i also have my TBR list insanly organised. since i have access to two library systems (the one in my hometown and the one in the town where i go to school) i have the name and author of each book followed by which libraries carry them. i also have them blocked by in which city i'm more likely get the book, in addition it's color coded and i honestly think i spend more time organising my list than actually reading the books.

then there's the website i have where i've listed all the books i've read since june of 2002 and included small summaries and ratings, like people actually care. but it makes me happy and has come in handy on a few occations.
 
Reading is what I do. I always have at least one book with me, but hardly a day goes by when I don't have less than three books. I've just now started to catalog my books, and now that I'm on spring break, hopefully I can get some done on that. If I ever forget to bring any books with me, I feel off all day. I'm usually ok though, seeing as there's bound to a book in one of my two bags.

Other than that, I just read whenever I can. I even get grounded from reading fiction sometimes. Not that it does any good. :D
 
You guys are all really, really weird.

(I liked the tip about the eraser, though. Maybe one of those soft gum erasers would be better?) :D
 
ok, well i keep al ist of all the books i've read, i love the smell of books and actually smell them, i buy books i've read already if i love them a lot, i talk about books non stop, i read anywhere including school, in line and in the bathtub(!!!). i could survivie ina library for months with food, i lvoe being surrounded by books. i applied to work ina library near me, whenever i go over to someone's house, the first thiing i look at is their books. i carry a book everywhere and also a To Read list. well, if i think of more i'll post them but yeah...
 
I don't have enough room to catalogue my books like that, but I did an inventory of them on my computer to keep track of them if I ever move. I have books on really weird subjects...for example, I just bought one on the history of symbols in all different civilizations. But since I'm the only teenager I know who has a library built into part of her room, I think I can honestly say I'm a pretty big book nerd.

What's so weird about reading in the bathtub? :rolleyes: It's the best place for it!!
(I suddenly heard every single one of the school of keep-the-books-looking pristine scream... ;) )

I make of list of books that I want to read every couple of months. And I also have a bunch of stickies with books in a series that I want to read. I also have a bunch of books that I haven't read, which are still in excellent condition (haven't opened them yet) lying around in my room...

I also peer at the end of the book to see what happens while I read; seem to forget how the book ends by the time I finish it anyways. I also read a portion of the book while I am in the bookstore just before I purchase them and I buy books based on the cover, especially when it is a book that I want to purchase.

I also bring a book to church with me everytime, without fail, and I seem to have more books signed out than I could possibly read in the time that I am given to keep them.
 
I can get pretty nerdy in my constant reorganisation of my book shelves to fit in new books. I try to keep everything flowing from subject to subject and other things (but I need to make some more room at the moment). Plus, I take pride in the fact that I bought 19 books in one day. :rolleyes:

I also love to keep a list of the books I've read and want to read. I recently started to write down the ISBN's of a lot of my books and other details to keep a more detailed notepad of what I've read. :p
 
I'm also addicted to the smell and feel of new books - I can spend up to 1/2 an hour just sitting there, opening and smelling all the books on my shelf that I still have to read. I keep a list of all the books that I have read (starting on Jan 1st of this year), listing title, author, number of pages, start and finish date, and a rating out of 10. I also keep a list of books to be read. One thing that my bf thought was especially nerdy was the fact that when I heard that someone had won $14 million on the Lotto, the first thing I said was "Wow, imagine all the books you could buy with that!" :eek: :D

Have you read many of Pratchett's books. Sorry for interrupring the thread. :)
