What books have you hated?

I will for ever offer my distaste for A Density of Souls by Christopher Rice...just because his mom is the vampire lady, it doesnt mean he can write. That god awful book couldve only been published because of his mom Anne.

I know the guy's name, I just wish I could forget it :D I'm glad you liked his other book but I've decided not to waste my time (or money!) on him when there are so many books out there waiting for me!!!

Oh, I agree! I'm not motivated to read another one of his, actually. McEwan's supposed to be a star, but somehow, I'm not enthusiastic about him. As you say, there are SO many others screaming to be read:)

Gosh I LOVED Saturday. Particularly the descriptions of his waking in the morning and the making of the fish soup. Saturday was the first book I've ever read that took place in "real time"
 
Pride and Prejudice. The characters are phlegmatic and stolid. And I beleive this novel was considered a great love story. *huh*?
 
That reminded me... I saw someone reading Jane Eyre on the bus today, and while I can't say I hated this book, I did find it terribly exhausting. I couldn't figure out what this person would read it for leisure.
 
One reads Harry Potter for leisure, not Jane Eyre. The Bronte's wrote beautiful, heart-wrenching, love stories that were not meant to be brought to the WC for a quick read.
 
In terms of popular fiction, I'd have to say The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum. I really enjoyed the movie and decided to give the book a try, since usually a novel blows the film out of the water. The book was just....blah. I found myself having a really hard time finishing it.

For more "classic" books...

The Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne (read it in school)
The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald
 
I thought "A Long Way Down" by Nick Hornby was a let-down. The characters aren't believable and I didn't actually care what happened to them.
 
There is only one book, written by man, I've absolutely hated, but now have come to love:


Moby Dick.


As a young boy, this book bored the living crap outta me. Now, taking a look back--trying another hand at it as a reader and a writer--I marvel at his words. I am in awe. If only contemporary authors had the ability or the skill to write like this.
 
I read a book once a while ago, The Door in the Wall(forget who wrote it), I absolutely hated it. Everybody said it was so great but I personally didn't like it.
 
I have tried reading 2 Philip Roth books and I just can't bring myself to finish them. One was The Human Stain and the other The Plot Against America. It's not that I hated them, I just couldn't keep on reading. It felt like I was having trouble breathing. :(
 
"Vous Revoir-Et si c'etait vrai2" (Just like Heaven2) by Marc Levy ...Jesus where to start...if I thought that "Just like Heaven 1" was mediocre, I know the second book is terrible...the story repeats all over again and in the end the girl ( Lauren) realizes in the most stupid manner that she knew all along who the guy (Arthur) was....

"Love Story" and "Oliver's story" by Erich Segal...the typical story…a rich guy marries a poor girl just to get his parents angry and in the end the girl dies

"Weathering Heights" by Emily Bronte ...school book ....the descriptions were really good though

and that's all folks!!!...............for now anyway :D :D :D

I didn't care for the Human Stain much either.

I know exactly what you mean. It took a lot of effort to finish The Plot Against America.

Like you said, it wasn't a bad book, but for whatever reason it was a real struggle to finish it.
 
Thanks Ronny and kd2005, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about these books! However, I can't bring mysefl to get rid of them (i.e. selling/trading), I keep thinking that one day I'll take the bull by the horns and finish them... :rolleyes:

There's another book that made me really miserable, Hopscotch by Julio Cortazar (is that the title in English?). This book is thought to be a masterpiece, at least by most intellectual snobs in Spanish speaking countries, especially in South America. The only reason I finished reading this "thing" is because I was visiting my Grandma and had nothing else to read. I found it to be boring, incoherent, full of itself and just off-putting. Of course I was told "oh you just didn't get it!":rolleyes: Whatever! Liking (although it's more like worshiping) this book is such a must in some circles that I'm sure many people feel the way I do but are just afraid to say it! Ok, rant over, sorry:eek: :eek: :eek:
 
The Woman Who Gave Birth To Rabbits by Emma Donoghue. It's a collection of short stories and it's absolute crap. I got it second hand in mint condition and thought I'd found a bargain - no, I hadn't, there was a reason it hadn't been read before. I was most astounded crap like that can get published.
 
I'm currently reading "Dangerous Minds" by LouAnne Johnnson.

I'm 1/4 of the way through it so I can't really say "I hated it" but so far, I think this author is full of crap. She basically wrote a book patting herself on the back about what a great teacher she is. The way she wrote the book is also very annoying. Every chapter takes place at a different point in time...and not chronologically either...egh...I dont want to give up on it though. Especially because its quite short (278 pgs.) and really friggin easy to read. But right now....its lame....And kinda prejudice...not all mexicans eats just BEANS ok!!!:mad:
