Terry Brooks

Eh, after all the nasty things I keep hearing about him, and the interview I read, and the comments I've read on his books, I doubt I'll ever read him. In fact, the interview alone was enough to convince me, just because he seemed so snobby...

Actually seeing it has made me scared enough to maybe havong to email Del-Rey and asking them specifically not to send me a copy.

What nasty things? What interview? What comments?  I'm curious since I used to read Brooks when I was younger.

I'd be interested as well. Everything thing I have heard about Brooks (even though I don't care for his work) is that he is a real good guy - to both fans and aspiring writers. Are you sure you're not talking about Terry Goodkind (who historically makes an ass out of himself in interviews?)

Actually, I think being snobbish shouldn't be a reason for not reading an author. I'm just thinking that if Guy Gavriel Kay is a huge snob, or GRRM is so arrogant mosquitoes wouldn't go near him, would I not read their work?

Uhm... most likely I will. I'd hate them and whack them with a french loaf, but I'd still buy their works, because they are so bloody good.

Hehe, the phrase 'Don't judge a book by its cover' comes to mind. I've enjoyed TBs books in the past and will definitely be picking up his latest to read. Haven't heard anything negative about Mr Brooks and I'll not 'judge the book by its author'. A good read is a good read.:D

Welk, I certainlyagre that an author's diposition has nothing to do with why I wouldn't or woukd read an author.

I'm not, I simply think Brooks is an awful writer.

Did you notice that the quote on the front is from Paolini? I think the publishers must really be struggling to find quotes for Brooks now (and I doubt that they'd want to put Hal Duncan's on for some reason).

Actually Paoloni's is probably more effective than the huge majority of author's blurbs they could solicit. Those two authors write to the same target audience (not to mentioned one of the biggest groups in fantasy). I remember someone I know (a former Del-Rey publicist) mentioning how hard it was to find credible reviewer outlets who wanted to review Brook's books (at a Nightshade thread I think) - and also mentioned it doesn't matter.

I'm not going to knock Del-Rey (as they are publishing Duncan in the U.S, which kicks major ass). I seriously doubt they are having troulbles getting blubs however, as said, Paolini is one of the top sellers in the business thus the blurb is more effective to that fanbase. The fact that he is one of the worst writers in the history of fiction, doesn't really matter (as one can tell by sales figures).

wow im not use to this kind of reaction to brooks nice to see the other side but i want to read the articles that raven was talking about

Actually you're right, probably clever marketing. Instantly puts off those who won't like it, but attracts those who will.

Whitetrash... hehe - there are also Brookes fans here - they's just not here (yet).

Different people have different reactions to different authors, so doubtless there will be people who will dislike your favourites.

For instance, there are people here (me included) who dislike Raymond E Feist, but that didn't stop fans from having one of the most interesting threads I've read on Feist here in TBF.

Yes ,I think its great here ,and people here are awesome ,and I .love all the feed back .Because they say why ,They dont like his work and they not just saying he sucks are being rude. S:D o this place does rock!!!:D

whitetrash it is because we are all critics at heart but non of us are harsh enough to actually be one! lol

Brooks is OK

His early stuff was a bit too Tolkien-recycled, but I really enjoy the books between Elfstones and the Heritage of Shanarra series. And the Word/Void books, which I do enjoy.

Hit and miss IMO

I CAN'T WAIT!!! I'm a huge Brooks fan! I LOVE the Shannara series, and have been trying to get all my friends to read them.

And whitetrash, are you the same whitetrash as on Shannara index? If you are, I'm Walker&Rumor there...
