Batman: Year One - Frank Miller

Okay, so I bought this graphic novel this weekend and read it... and I really liked it. I didn't love it, but I really really liked it. This is my first Miller read and was incredibly curious about his writing style... I'm a little disappointed, but still impressed.

I found his take on Batman interesting. I kept trying to make comparisons to Batman Begins, but nothing really stood out.

I grew up with Batman: The Animated Series (1992) and the Tim Burton movies (the George Clooney one never happend. Never happened!). So it was pretty cool to see Commissioner Gordon as Lieutenant and neat to see how his wife
was named Barbara and had a son, when in the series, he had a daughter (who became Batgirl) named Barbara
... Well, nothing terribly interesting for me to report. It was just an interesting take on this DC character.

The artwork was great. I like how they modeled Bruce after Gregory Peck (so hot!). And I was happy to see that Todd Klein was their letterer.

This graphic novel, and the past few ones I've been reading make me wonder, where the hell was I when these (V for Vendetta, The Sandman...) came out?! Oh yeah. I was about 6-years-old. :p

I'll have to pick up Miller's Dark Knight Returns sometime soon.

Dark Knight Returns is great. I would also suggest Hush, and Arkham Asylum. Also, Paul Pope is doing right now Batman: Year 100, very good. Matt Wagner just finished Batmen and The Monstermen. Oh yes, Gotham Country line was a wicked one. Enjoy!

I especially like Mazuchellhi's artwork in Batman Year One... the story is good but not among the best in my opinion. If you wan't Miller at his best, you should try Sin City.

@Thaibebop: Thank you so much for the recommendations. I'll look into those.

@Lucien: Thanks also... somewhere else, I wrote: Interesting. I expected more out of Miller's writing style, but I really appreciated his take on this Batman history; Mazzucchelli's artwork is fantastic; Lewiss' coloring really complimented the art as well; I was also happy to see that Todd Klein did the lettering.

Overall (script & art): 8 out of 10

And as far as Sin City goes, I really did think that would've been my first Miller read, but I stumbled upon Year One by accident and at a great price, so that's why I ended up reading it first. I've been planning for almost a year now to get this Amazon.com editon of Sin City (box set): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/15...f=pd_bbs_1/002-6552881-5738447?_encoding=UTF8
aec1.images_amazon.com_images_P_1593963149.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Hopefully I'll be able to get it soon.
Thanks guys.

I preferred his daredevil stuff for some reason. You may want to have a peruse through a couple of Sin City trades in your local comic store (and most major bookshops since the release of the film) just to ensure the ensure the content is to your tastes before investing in that chosty set.

Lenny Nero also recommended the Daredevil stuff to me as well. That's another one I'll have to look into. Thanks for the suggestions F.B.

I'm sure I'll like the Sin City series as well. If I don't, oh well, I have a boyfriend that'll probably be into it too. :p
