i have been readin these and they strike me as being very samey. recycled characters and plot direction which leads me to beleive that i have wasted my money. does anyone feel the same?

Yes - It was one of the worst novels I've ever read. Eddings wasn't a good author to start with, but the Elder Gods wasn't even anything like as good as his earlier series like the Elenium or Belgariad. He came up with one story and a small group of characters, and there's only so many times you can write that story. With the Belgariad and the Elenium , it was just about acceptable, because you hadn't seen it that many times, and they were at least slightly different in some ways. They also, while not well written, weren't anything like as badly written as the Elder Gods.

I haven't read anything more in this series because the Elder Gods was just so terrible.

O.k yes i would say you were wasting your money and time with Eddings i havnet read non of hios stuff in over 15 years but it wasnt that good back then

my issue is i can't leave a series of books unread if i have started it, which means not only am i reading the elder gods series i am readin jordans wheel of time, fiest ever growin multi series Kingdom books, gooskinds sword of truth salvatores drizzt books and so on...

at least he others at some point produced some very good, nigh on astounding books, but the eddings' have onlygot a couple of good series and one decent book, Belgarath the sorcorer and that was anything special.

This is basically what one comes to expect when they pick up a book by David Eddings. There has certainly been no evidence to suggest otherwise.

Agreed

I enjoyed the Belgariad/Mallorean back in the day, and even the almost-identical Elenium. But the Elder Gods - ugh, I can't believe I wasted $17 on the hardcover of the first one. Not only recycled, but thinly written characters. The worst fantasy I had read in years.

Read the Belgariad instead, if you haven't read it.
