Do you listen while you read???

I actually, believe it or not, can't listen to soothing music while I read or I realize I haven't taken in what I read at all. What about the rest of you?

~Josh

I listen to music whilst doing almost everything. I have the TV tuned to VH1 country all night long. If we have a power failure during the night and the music stops, I instantly wake up.

I can't listen to anything when I'm studying or reading if I want any hope of remembering anything. Music/noise distracts me.

I've been told I'm strange this way.

I can sometimes listen to soft music with no words....but if there are words its too tempting for me to sing instead of read...lol...haha scary...lol

I do the same thing. I sing..and turn the pages...then 30 pages later realize I remember nothing!!!

Most of the time I listen (via headphones) to Brain Enhancement CD while I read. It works for me. I also listen to Pink Floyd:

Good choice of music, Aqua. YEAH to Pink Floyd. Can't make up my mind if 'Dark Side of the Moon' or 'The Wall' is the best. Borrowed 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn' the other day and wasn't very impressed with that.

I always used to study to music, not nearly as boring :D

I find it strange that so many people find it hard to read or study whilst listening to music.

When I was at uni, one of the tutors recommended that we use music as a learning aid. For example, we had to learn a poem in French. We were listen to the poem at the same time as listening to a piece of classical music (always the same piece of music).

When it came to exam time, there was a question on the poem, and as soon as I recalled the music, I also recalled the words to the poem.

I'll join you in your strangeness, ds; I am the same.

What music do you listen to (if any?)

I go back and forth on music: sometimes I'll leave it on, sometimes I prefer total silence. It all depends on what mood I'm in.

Ditto.

If I listen to tuneage while reading/studying it has to lack in lyrics. I can sometimes have classical or other such instrumental music on in the background, but it has to be quiet. Generally, I just listen to music or read :).

Yes i'm the same, reading takes too much concentration (as does music to a lesser extent) for me to do both without reading the same line for half a day!

Personally I can't listen to music while pleasure reading. As many of you have said I can't retain what I'm reading. However, when I was in college my organic chemistry teacher had classical music on in the lab. When asked why she said it was a proven learning aid.

I also can't sleep with music on in the home but I often sleep with the television turned down quite low, or with a white noise machine.

I listen to music all day long: at work, exercising, reading, whatever. I force myself to revise for exams without music, because I know for some reason they don't let you sit an exam with a mobile phone or mp3 player.

Well, I'm one that cannot listen to anything while reading. I find it way too distracting and cannot concentrate. If someone has the tv on, I have to go to the other room to read. If I try, I find myself rereading the same paragraph over and over with nothing sinking in.

The only way I can listen to music, is if I am doing housework, or some other sort of mindless activity (espceially if I dislike it). That way I can play the robot, and forget what I have to do, and still do it. :)

Same with me. I need "quiet" when I read. Now sleeping, I can sleep through anything. :)

I like quiet instrumental music when I read but lyrics can be distracting, I'll want to sing along:eek:

Well, I can listen to stuff like Fugue by Malmsteen while reading and that is some crazy stuff. Beethoven's Fifth played by Malmsteen as well. Go figure

~Josh

I usually have MTV2 on in the background, I don't having it blaring, but loud enough to hear.

Otherwise I put a CD on, one I'm familiar with, so I don't stop reading to listen to the lyrics :)
