Dean Koontz: The Taking

I am considering reading this book so if anyone has read it please comment. If you do not like it, please could you give me another recommendation for Koontz ... I'm interested in reading his books and would like a good starting point.

Thanks! ;) :p

I read The Taking. I enjoyed the read, but it left me confused. The book, however, was an excellent expose of suspense. If you enjoy books like that or just want to try Koontz, I suggest Velocity, One Door Away From Heaven, ^^ Mr. Murder, Odd Thomas, and Forever Odd. These are the only books of his that I enjoyed to read. Have fun, and hopefully, be scared out of your mind! ^^

What about Hideaway? It was pretty good.

Start at the beginning. Koontz's later works seem too fabricated, as if he writes for the deadline nowadays, not for the pleasures of writing.

I wouldn't recommend The Taking as your first Koontz book. Velocity was good as was Odd Thomas for his more recent stuff. The Taking was OK, but I didn't find it indicative of the majority of his books. Whatever you choose, enjoy.

Tommy, I would advise you to avoid The Taking at all costs. It was one of the worst books I've ever read.

I'm generally a Koontz fan and have read most of his novels, but his work is extremely variable. He writes some good stuff, some average stuff and some complete rubbish - The Taking fits into the last category. Reading it would be a complete waste of your time, and if it is your first taste of Koontz's work, it would give you the wrong impression of his ability.

He can write some very good stuff. Books of his I enjoyed include Intensity, Watchers and Strangers. There are a lot more that were good, but I'm at work so I can't check the titles! In short, read just about anything of Koontz's apart from The Taking! :)

I absolutely loved this book. It was not my first Koontz book or probably my favorite, I think that honor would have to got to phantoms, but I thought The Taking was extremely cool. Every horror writer has to do their mandatory end of the world book and this was Koontz's, it was excellent. I am not a huge Koontz fan, for every book of his I like there are usually three I hate. But this book was great, and legitamitely scary at times. But at the same time it was a head scratcher trying to figure out what he may be implying.

Well, there are certainly some mixed opinions! :p
Thanks for all your help. From what I have noted from other forums, it seems that Intensity seems to be a good place to start -- so I will read this first.

Thanks again.

Wow.

I can't believe it.
I bought Intensity today and so far I have read 20 pages.

Already I am gripped, which I know would probably sound stupid to the people that have read this book considering nothing of particular importance has happened. But the way Koontz has described Chyna's memory about
: the incident where her mother's boyfriend successfully bashed an old couple into the canal in a car
really indicates his flare of literacy.

I can't wait to read this book!!!!!!! :p :p :p
