Harry Harrison: Stainless Steel Rat

I'm tempted to re-read the Stainless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison for a bit of light relief.

The first time through I read them in the order in which they were published, but this time I'd like to read them in series chronological order, i.e. start with A Stainless Steel Rat Is Born. The thing is, I'm really not sure of the correct order. Anyone out there able to help?

Ive only read the first one, so i have no idea of the chronology, but the books rocked!!

Edit: I found the chronology for you ;)

A Stainless Steel Rat is Born
The Stainless Steel Rat Gets Drafted
The Stainless Steel Rat Sings the Blues
The Stainless Steel Rat (The original novel)
The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge
The Stainless Steel Rat Saves the World
The Stainless Steel Rat Wants You!
The Stainless Steel Rat For President
The Stainless Steel Rat Goes to Hell
The Stainless Steel Rat Joins the Circus

Phil :)

I liked the books, too -- very glib, smooth reading, tongue-in-cheek. They sort of reminded me of Keith Laumer's Retief books.

I have a bid on a few SSR books. For those that have read the series, is it better to read them in written or chronological order?

I read them many many years ago :) I would say it's better to read them in order BUT haveing said that you can read them in any order you like and it won't matter at all because the books are all totally self contained.

Whilst they are pretty much stand alone, I would recommend that you start either with "The Stainless Steel Rat" (the first one written) or "A Stainless Steel Rat Is Born" (the first chronologically). That way you'll get a better feel for the main character than if you just dive in at random  I also believe that the older books are better than the last two or three, but that might just be me ...

Agreed. The character is still fun, but losing some of his crispness. It's hard to keep writing about one character and bringing something new in all the time. I do like in the later books when his boys join in the fun.

Did anyone else catch the bit about using a flywheel in a car for energy? This is related to what is being done today with some of the hybrid cars, and it was a brilliant idea. He just used the mass of a large object instead of electricity. The new Hybrids use magnets around the flywheel to slow the car during braking and fuel capacitors or batteries. Then, when the car takes off, the power gained can be put back into the flywheel.

Currently 3/4 of the way through The SSR. Easy reading, a bit obvious, but entertaining, which is all I need really. I reckon this would make quite a good screen play for a movie.

I've never read the novels, but (many moons ago), there used to be an adaptation in 2000AD comic, which I really enjoyed. Maybe I should get around to reading the books! :)

Having read the first book and 2000AD. This actually came to mind as I finished the novel (or rather novellet as it is only 160 odd pages)

Robo Hunter reminds me of the SSR, smart talking dude that comes out on top., set in a futuristic world run by big brother type corporations and governments.

I haven't read Stainless Steel Rat in probably 25 years if not longer.

Holy crap I'm old.
