Softback; while there is something nice about hardback, it's just so much easier to read a paperback book.

Pen or pencil?
Definitely pen for writing.

Paper clip or staple?
Staple.

Holding a book in hand or laying it on your desktop?
In hand, the whole putting the book down thing never works, just annoys me.

Shelving them - something satisfying about them being on display properly.

History.

Fiction or non-fiction?
Fiction, though non-fiction is just as worthy of regard. But personally I feel fiction is most satisfying and rewarding.

Paper clip or staple? Staple. Have you ever had a fancy stapler and unhooked the bottom so you could staple things on boards and stuff? I've recently discovered it's really fun to shoot staples at people this way. Staple war! :D
