Book suggestions - a female lead

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any fantasy/adventure-type books with females as lead characters. Things like Children of the Dust, The Winter of Fire by Sheryl Jordan, the Tomorrow, When the War Began series by John Marsden and Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman.

I'm trying to get ideas for a book to get my 17-year-old sister for Christmas.

Thanks in advance :)

What about those Marion Zimmer-Bradley books? Mists of Avalon? Arthurian Fantasy with female leads I think. Doesn't the Diana Gabaldon series have a female lead?

Yes, all of the Zimmer-Bradley books I've read have a female lead, I liked the Firebrand the lead is Kassandra of Troy.

I can't think of very many fantasy books I've read that don't have female leads. Here are a few girl-lead fantasies I've read and enjoyed (in order of liked best to least):

Diplomacy of Wolves, (book one in a trilogy) by Holly Lisle
Green Rider, (book one in a trilogy) by Kristen Britain
Archangel, (book one in trilogy--but works on it's own)by Sharon Shinn
Daughter of the Forest, (book one in a trilogy, but works on it's own) by Juliet Marillier

Hope that helps.

I have a really good suggestion(I am also 17), I absolutely love Charlotte Prentiss. You Might Try The Island Tribe & The Ocean Tribe.

Green Rider by Kristen Britain and The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley are two of my favourites. (as well as their respective sequels)

I once read a great fantasy called Daughter of the Drow, by Elaine Cunningham. Its set in the Forgotten Realms series, if you're familiar with that at all...and if you're not, its a great place to start. There are two more books after that, Tangled Webs and Windwalker.

I'll second the Holly Lisle series... it's good. Many, if not all, of her books have strong female leads. One of her newer books, Talyn, just came out in paperback recently, and I loved it, too.

Mercedes Lackey writes some fun fantasy with a romance element for the Luna line that are her takes on fairy tales... One Good Knight is one title. They're apparently called the 500 kingdoms series, and there are two or three books out in it already.

Jaqueline Carey's Kushiel books have a strong female lead, and are great books, but might not be for you/her... some topics there are a little more adult.

Oh, and Elizabeth Haydon's series that starts with Rhapsody is another favorite of mine.

And I'll stop now... I could probably go on all day thinking of other suggestions.

The adventure-type book I would suggest is the Jean Auel novels- the Earth Children series. Those novels have a female lead, Ayla.

Pictered below is the third installment: The Mammoth Hunters.
