Alexandre Dumas: The Three Musketeers

NotTheDoctor said:
The one I'm talking about came out in 1993. The theme song, "All for love" (Sting, Rod Stewart and Bryan Adams, was a huge success.)
i thought it was good, not like the other musketeer crap things...this movie had actually been inspired by the book...

OMG OMG! *long rant*

yeah, i love this book.

my avatar is from the russian adaptation of the book, it's actually very nice, quite faithful to the book.

as for richelieu, i wouldn't say he's necessarily evil, just kind of selfish and ambitious I guess. And also jealous because he loves anne of austria, and because she doesn't love him, he wants to spite her. but at the end
when he gives d'artagnan the commision or whatever it was
it shows that he admires honor and bravery and he's not just some evil cartoon villian who has no honor.

What other books by dumas have you people read? The first one i read was the count of monte cristo, during vacation. we recently visited the spot we vacationed at when i was reading the book and i cried. but yeah, the ones i've read

3 musketeers
20years after
10 years after
The Corsican Brothers
The Chevalier d'Harmental
Queen Margot
La Dame de Monsereau(currently reading)
count of monte cristo

I found a nicely bound hardcover edition of this novel at a used bookstore. The only apparent flaw is a smudge of white on the cover from what looked to be perhaps paint, but I can forgive such a small imperfection for the price of six dollars. It will be a pleasure to be able to read this story again after so many years.

Also I found a copy of The Man In the Iron Mask during the same trip, but it isn't something I have read prior to the purchase of my own copy. This one is just a paperback with the cover art being just the poster art for the movie.

Just curious if anyone has read this translation and what they think of it. Richard Pevear does a beautiful job on the Russian books when teamed with his wife. I've looked at it and it's a very nice looking edition.

I love Dumas. The 3 musketeers was one of the books i read maybe 3-4 times  So by Dumas i've read:

The 3 Musketeers
20 Years After
Queen Margot
Count of Monte Cristo (i am ashamed to say i still need to finish that though...i keep meaning to go back to it but i just have other books i want to read all the time)
The Man In The Iron Mask

An excellent book. I've read it three or four times, in different editions. I didn't really like
the ''Man in the Iron Mask'' though. I was excited about reading it, but it let me down.

Course, " Count of Monte Cristo" is my favorite Dumas book.

( Oh, and the movie verion of Three Musketeers that I enjoyed the most was from the 70's and starred Oliver Reed and Christopher Lee. They were extremely fun and came very close to how I imagined the characters behaving.)

I own three versions of the three musketeers. not one of them is good. i'm wworking on buying the good one. I cried at the end of the man in the iron mask, but I agree, it was a bit of a letdown-mostly because of Raoul.

I dunno..my fave is between monte cristo and the musketeers. Depends on my mood at the moment.

I think it was because " Iron Mask" made too much about them growing old. It depressed it to the point where it was tedious to read about them. It would no doubt have been best to leave off at the first book, when they were still likeable.

I haven't read that translation of Three Musketeers but I have read Richard Pevear's translation of Anna Karenina and I can say it's absolutely brilliant. So if he's as good in French as in Russian then definitely recommended.
