Favorite book

I really enjoyed the two David Sedaris books I read last summer: Naked and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. I love his warped sense of humor and all the stories he had about his family.

I would like to know what all of your favorite books are so I might read them. My personal favorites are all the dragonlance books and all related titles.

Does it matter if they're not SF related?? Cause then I can give you a whole long list...:D

It's hard to play favorites with books, but recently I reread Wicked by Gregory Maguire for the third time. It's the life story of the Wicked Witch of the West, but it's not a kid's book at all (actually it would be extremely inappropriate for a child to attempt to read it). It's got underlying themes that make it great rather than just the plot itself. The sequel to Wicked was very disappointing though. Also, almost anything by Stephen King (if you like that genre). Recently I've started reading Michael Crichton books. He seems to write mostly SF involving technology gone too far, and he always explains the science (so much that it sometimes gets annoying). He can write suspense and action great!! Once Jurassic Park got going I couldn't put it down.

I loved reading the Dragonlance books - got me started on fantasy. I would recommend Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series if you liked Dragonlance. I am into dragons, so that's what I tend to recommend. I just finished a book called Dragonworld by Byron Preiss that I really enjoyed. Personally, I didn't get past the first couple of chapters in Wicked - just didn't like it. But that's just me...

I agree with your michael crichton thought, but for the part about it being annoying. I like the over explanation because it gets me interested and adds to the things I already know.

David Eddings did a good job with his Belgariad series...
Robert Jordan........Wheel of Time....but after a few they got boring to me.
JRR Tolkien...The Lord of the Rings....some places are hard to get thru in the books but worth it.
Maggie Shayne....vampire series
Laurell K Hamilton....Anita Blake series(vampires too)
Brooks, Terry - The Sword of Shannara ....I read only this one,it has others in the series
Have a Good read,Marycathie

If you're looking for a great fantasy/SF novel, I'd recommend Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. I'm really bad at summarizing, so I'd just look it up on Amazon if you're interested. It's basically about 3 characters, Raoden, Sarene and Hrathen who interact with a city called Elantris-which has gone from being the city of the gods to a cursed wasteland. It's an amazing book.
Also, another good fantasy series is George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. The first book is A Game of Thrones. It's unlike anything I've ever read before. In my personal reading experience, there is BGRRM and AGRRM-before George R.R. Martin and after George R.R. Martin. I can't gurantee you'll like it but I loved it.

Thank You All

Thank you, all of you, for your suggestions and help with selecting new books to read I appreciate it and hope you all have happy readings.

Dragonlance (only the chronicles and legends) best fantasy series ever written imo. the level of character development is unparalleled in any other fantasy series, you wont find your typical 1 dimensional; you killed my (foster)father so I'm going to kill you character, or im an orphaned child who has been predestined by fate/gods to save the world from evil... yes dragonlance is the best...
and a side not (this will be contreversial) but Eddings is the most overated fantasy author ever... have you noticed that all his stories are pretty much exactly the same? evil god that is killed by hero, special rock with uber powers that pawns anything and everything, a nice god that accompanies the hero, and exceptionally annoying smug banter between characters... i hate eddings...
oh yes i forgot to recommend a fantasy author.. Gemmel will give you hero's that will absolutely pawn anything and everything... although he does seem a little pre-occupied with aging(lol) and also a very nice touch is he introduces a character at the start of a chapter who is later mowed down by the wtfownage hero

The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
