Role Playing

Is anyone around here ineterested in roleplay forums and whatnot? I've been in to them since I was little. They've changed alot though, everyone's been getting into these SIM message boards. Personally, those are much too restricting for my tastes. I enjoy the freeform RPs, where the admins give very few guidelines and everyone is simply allowed to write and create.

Anyways, just curious about the writers out there, specifically fantasy-related. I couldn't personally write an entire novel :p but I do enjoy writing. That's why I find forum-style RPs to be so enticing.

I don't think a roleplaying forum here would draw a lot of interest. And without a good number of dedicated players, it wouldn't be worth the time when there are plenty of other sites dedicated to roleplaying.

Well aside from the forum I have linked in my sig. This was actually meant to start a general discussion about RPing, not for the sake of advertising. I agree, having a low number of members makes the idea of RPing much less interesting. But what's really difficult is finding members with high standards and writing abilities, as well as the courage to express their ideas on a freeform site. Many RPers have grown accustomed to single-plot RP message boards where the admin dictates what goes on, members simply follow.

I miss the old days when I first started to RP, and the message boards were simply available to expand your style and express your imagination. I thought bringing up RP boards on this forum would be interesting, just because I believe RPing is a wonderful tool to expand your creativity and practice writing for an audience.

Ah, sorry. I thought you meant you wanted to start one here.

But what's really difficult is finding members with high standards and writing abilities

I was never able to get into roleplaying because of this. The lack of grammar skill and childishness in many members is frustrating.

Indeed it is. Also the short replies. I post a 4 paragraph reply, and in return I get a sentence with no punctuation or proper spelling -.- It makes a mockery of my post and to RPing in general. A lot of people don't take RPing seriously because of the maturity levels of most sites. But there are some that really take writing seriously.

regardless, i am interested

yes i love RPG s if that is what you mean

maybe you should start a thread about books referencing these

WARHAMMER... or the epics such asLord of the Rings

maybe Terry Brooks works?

Well I never really thought of an RPG in novel form. I can imagine it tying in with the fantasy books like LotR, but the whole draw to RP boards and things of that nature is the idea of sharing your creativity with another person. I enjoy the interaction of imaginations and writing styles.

As far as Warhammer goes, I haven't roleplayed using those means, but I know several people who RP on the Warcraft games.

And about the 4 paragraphs, I have this creeping sensation of carpal tunnel...

I'm almost positive that many of the major video or tabletop RPGs have various series of novels, Anime, Manga and the like.

As far as Warcraft goes...wow.

Literally.

With the explosion of WoW, (the endearing acronym for World of Warcraft, you are probably aware of it or maybe know someone who plays it.) I find myself wary of my usual haunts;
Gamestop, EB games and any other Videogame retailer in general. Throwing caution tho the wind, I enter and am immediatly buried in a pile of WoW paraphernalia and fanatics dressed as Orks.

Wow.. sorry to completely digress there. And grossly overexaggerate. And the grammer of a 6 year old.

Does Ultima Online count?

I stay away from it as it looks waaaaaay too time consuming.

Starkwether you should try the link in my sig, it's actually a message board that me and my friend created. It's small and the activity level is rather low, but there is still enough activity that you should get a response if you start a thread.

I play WoW myself, actually  But I know my boyfriend and several of his friends RP on Warcraft 3.

SFG I don't know anything about Ultima Online, but I'm sure you could find a way to RP with it :p And most online games are very time consuming, I agree.

I'm more into either actual roleplay or chat-rooms turned roleplay rooms, personally. If you like those ideas, I could try to send you a few, assuming you're over 18.

I do a couple of forum-based RPs, set in the worlds of various books I've read. I agree that it's hard to find an RP that suits my taste. Writing ability is a huge issue, but as I'm not the most wonderful writer myself, as long as the overall grammar, spelling, and length is good, I don't mind. I know there are some really high level RPs out there, though, that intimidate me since I can't write that well.

Another problem I've come up with when trying to find good RPs is size. I don't like huge ones, for the most part, because I'm too busy to keep up when they move so quickly. But smaller ones often die fairly quickly.

Many RPers have grown accustomed to single-plot RP message boards where the admin dictates what goes on, members simply follow.
I, too, have mostly seen plot-based RPs. I don't mind a plot, though, as long as it's not set in stone. In the RPs I'm currently doing, the plot is more of a guideline. It gives a story a direction, so people aren't just wandering aimlessly, but deviations from it are perfectly fine. Also, the endings in my current RPs haven't been determined yet, so anything can happen (though of course, the "good guys" usually win). As for freeform RPS, I've also seen take-offs of Harry Potter, where there's no real plot, but its freeform within a magic school. However, I haven't seen too many completely freeform RPs.

I haven't done much RPing lately, though, as school is keeping me busy.

ha ha finally!

I was waiting for the inevitable topic of Adult Roleplay to show up.

Nicely played (and tactful might I add ) Rein!

Seems this thread has really evolved to an all encompassing Role Playing discussion.

Regarding those of you who don't have time or shy away from lengthy RPGs
(Of the Video game sort), try more free-form games like Diablo, or old school ones like Fall Out if you are a PC gamer.

For those of you with platform systems I have two words for you:

Final Fantasy

Anyone who owns a Playstation and has not at least dabbled in the Final Fantsy series should be ashamed of themselves.

Oh yeah I almost forgot to mention the underrated cult classic gritty flight sim for PC; HARDWAR.

I prefer "shoot 'em up" games like Day of Defeat. The "high' blood splatter option rocks.
